3.25.04 update:

I have completed the drawings for a Silver Flute monitor combined with 2 Dayton 7" aluminum woofers to be driven by a separate amp. I was just short of building it when I heard a viscious rumor that the second batch of Silver Flutes are different than the one John Krutke used in his design. So building it is on hold for now. Regardless, it is a fairly cheap overall speaker, checking in at $171.18 in parts for the pair. The cost of the cabinet is going to be a bit over $100 with a sheet of cherry from Tape Ease. A separate amp will add a bit of cost, but I plan on using an old receiver for the time being fed by the subwoofer out on my receiver. I have settled on using 6 layers of "pressboard" (pegboard without the holes) laminated together. Maybe not the ideal material or construction, but it's cheap ($6.39 a sheet) and flexible (to minimize springback). The Sonus-esque back will be made of 3 pieces of MDF roughly cut to complete the ellipse shape and then sanded smooth. The baffle will be held on with 12 screws to allow future upgrades in drivers.

Sonus Faber Cabinet Clone

Someone somewhere once said a picture is worth a thousand words so here are a bunch of pictures.

A golden section with another square added on and an ellipse inscribed inside. This one measures 10" x 2'-2 3/16". (or 2.618:1)

A section of the speaker. I am planning on using 5 or 6 layers of 1/8" pressboard laminated. The stuff is cheap and comes in many wonderful sizes. The outer baffle is 8" wide. The back piece will be solid MDF painted black and shaped to continue the ellipse. Horizontal braces will be about every 6". The interior cross section is 112.8 sq. in.

I'm also considering covering the baffle in leather.

I've also thought about pouring some sort of goop on the inner walls like the North Creek recipe. Maybe some fiberglass resin.

Then I have to veneer the curve without a vacuum press. Maybe contact cement? No, maybe a curved press.

And then I have to get the delicious gloss finish like here. Hmm... not sure how to do that without a spray booth.

I guess it's more words than pictures, oh well.
