TMJ Disorders

The two Temporomandibular Joints(TMJ's) attach the mandible(lower jaw) on each side of the head in front of the ears. Each joint has a small disc which allows smooth movement of the jaw. A malfunction of one or both of these jaw joints can be caused by trauma, whiplash, malocclusion (bad bite), poor posture, bruxism(teeth grinding) or skeletal malformation. Symptoms of a TMJ disorder can include:
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw joints
  • Limited jaw opening or locking
  • Earaches, congestion or ringing ears
  • Dizzines
  • Pain when chewing
  • Facial pain and frequent headaches
  • Neck and/or throat pain
  • Difficulty in closing teeth together
Correctly diagnosing a TMJ disorder requires a complete head and neck examinations, appropriate x-rays and sophisticated computer test of jaw movment and state-of-the art equipment needed to diagnose and treat TMJ disorders. The majority of patients benefit from non-surgical treatment which may include a custom-fit oral device, medications and physical therapy.
