Welcome to steves Net-Page

right click on any of these to save them to your hard disc to help you put together your own pages at a later date

this page is intended to be useful for those

who want links purely to get web page related

info.

Begginners!!When downloading files etc from the net the first thing to do is ensure that you have a file(or directory) into which to put them. You can put them into 'My Documents', or create an alternative.

1]To create an alternative open up 'My Computor'/Operating[C:]/ and with the mouse placed in a space, not on a file, RIGHT click, a menu list appears. Click 'New' (wait), another menu appears, go to 'Folder', A new folder appears with the title 'new folder' coloured in. Place curser on the coloured part and click once. This leaves a blank space into which you can place your own title. "My downloads" or whatever.Again place curser on a blank space and right click. go to 'Arrange icons'/ 'by name' and this will automatically tidy up the placing of files on the screen. The file is now ready to be used.

2]There are two types of files that are downloaded from the net. Those that come ready to use, usually with the extention '.exe' just click on install.exe or setup.exe, and it will go through the install process. The most common type have the extention'.zip'.Zip files are compressed and you have to have a program to uncompress them. The best program is Winzip, this is shareware, but you dont have to pay for it. (It asks you to pay after 21 days but still continues to work after that period of time. If you pay it stops reminding you, and allows you to zip up files if you want, but for the moment all we're interested in is unzipping files.)The winzip program installs on your system, once you click on the downloaded file. Once its on , you dont have to do anything else with it. Go to the site that is offering the downloading program you want and once downloaded the Winzip program takes over.It will ask you to which directory you want the program put into. Once you specify the file you want , it continues installing the program that you downloaded.Close Winzip and your ready to go.

CREATING WEBPAGES!To start with, there are several sites that allow you to upload your pages to them and/or have the faclity to allow you to build your page on-line. The most popular is likely to be Geocities .Others are Tripod .Also Spree That boast's unlimited webspace. There is also Webjump .All these sites are worth a look, but there really is no point attempting to produce a page for the shear hell of it! Try to work out what you want to say, promote, whatever well before attempting an on-line web creation, or using your own pc software.

After you have had a look at these sites you will soon realise that there are affiliate programmes that pay cash for having banners put on your pages. These are quite exciting but do look at the small print. Amazon com will bill you if a costomer returns an item after clicking on a banner on your site. i would hope that this is to retrieve a payment that they credited you with, [this is unclear]. There are also traders that will put your banner on their site if you put their's on your's. You will find all of these from the above sites.

The ones that I use come mainly from Clicktrade .

When you get accepted for participating in these programmes you are presented with the html code. Use your curser to select all the code. Go to EDIT on your browser and select COPY. Bring up your page [off - line] and go to EDIT, and select PASTE. The code will be transferred to your page. Again select all the code and select HTML from your page making software. Save, and preview [on-line] this will show your page with the banner.

Beware that a lot of banners will slow down how your page loads and could even put off the very people you want to see your work.

webring

Another way of getting people to view your site is to join a web ring. Use your search engine to bring up web+ring and you'l see that a whole range of subjects are covered. Choose ones that closely concern the content of your pages and click on 'join ring' . Again you will be emailed with the html code that you copy and paste into you web pages.

Java!

Java is an increasingly popular programing language that is gaining popularity, although netscape is attributed with the introduction of java script the java language was and is developed by the SUN ORGANISATION

You can down load their java developement kit from the above site. which you can use to write programs with.Download it into a pre set file on your C hard drive and add another file inside it called 'My Programs'.

Its not an easy language to get to grips with. There is a glossary page worth looking at to familarise yourself with the language.

For relevant books and tutorials go to their bookssite. Also try the online tutorials at

You can create really bizare emails .In Internet Explorer, go to tools/options/compose then, tick 'mail', then select 'create new'. This brings up a wizard that allows you to import a picture that can be tiled and used as a background.
