George & Mildred's

For those of you who dont know, we have recently had additions to our family - 2 egyptian tortoises called George & Mildred!.
Whilst travelling to Alexandria we noticed a little old man selling rocks from a basket. On closer inspection they sprouted sad little turd-like heads
looking around all glum and depressed. Always a sucker for a hard luck story, I ventured that I would like to offer them a good home so how much was he asking for them. The first price he gave me you would only pay if they came fitted with engines but after some solid haggling we settled on
what turned out to be only 7 times the local rate!!. We didnt do bad,did
we?.
With neither Sadie or myself knowing the first thing about tortoise care it
meant a heavy surfing session on the web. At first they seemed a little shy
and didn't come out of there shell's much but a bowl of chopped lettuce and tomato goes a long way in winning over trust and after no time at all the little blighters were roaming everywhere.
The next part of the plan was to set them up in a more permanent home.
The cardboard box in the corner of the lounge was beginning to look a bit
shoddy so we moved them onto the balcony. With 3 bags of dried leaves,
a dozen breeze blocks and a little help from Rick they now have their own
little jungle to forage in as well as the full run of outside. They seem happy enough - wish I was a tortoise!
