Stonehaven & Dunnottar Castle
Dunnottar Castle sits on the treacherous coast of Scotland, on the North Sea. Two of its more famous admirers were William Wallace & Mary, Queen of Scots.
In the 1600's, the Scottish Regalia (sceptor, sword, & crown; also called the "Honours") were smuggled here from Edinburgh by 2 wives of Scottish nobility - they were cleverly disguised as peasants. The sword had to be broken in half to be hidden, but the plan worked. Oliver Cromwell never knew their whereabouts.
We hiked four miles to the site of the Castle ruins. This was the only day it rained on our trip, but we didn't mind, because we thought it added to the atmosphere of the whole place. The only sounds here were sheep, seagulls, & bagpipes!
To the right, Caitlin stands in front of some great Scottish coastal scenery. Manuevering around Dunnottar is a challenge, since everything is basically left the way it's been for centuries. One wrong footing can send you down several feet to the rocks. We liked that it wasn't "touristy", but it was tricky getting about.
More great scenery on a blustery day. We were pelted by cold raindrops!

The port is that of Stonehaven, the nearest town to Dunnottar Castle. Every house has a fabulous garden, and everyone stops and says "hello". We had some great fish & chips in this small, yet vibrant, town.
We were lucky to see a wedding party outside a church - all the men in kilts!
