I joined the Still I Rise Book Club in October 2001. As a member, I have been exposed to all types of books, as we don’t focus on one genre. I like that our discussions are lively, candid, deep, and most importantly, honest. I look forward to our monthly meetings and I miss members when they are not present. Our gatherings make me feel like I am sitting in a circle of sisterhood and that is very special to me.
Our leader, Mrs. Nadine McIlwain-Massey, keeps the order and often makes excellent points. The others members including myself, agree and disagree on all levels of the book and the discussion. It is interesting to see how people can read the same book and come to so many different conclusions. But that’s the beauty of discussions, being able to leave with a different point of view than when you arrived.
I learn a lot from the women of the Still I Rise Book Club, but I also hope that I offer a little something as well.
