I was 16 years old when Kevin and I found out we were going to be parents at a really young age. Kevin had just graduated from high school and started looking for job to support me and our baby. We wanted to get married but my mother wouldn't let us.
On December 19, 1989 I went for my weekly doctors visit and they were concerned with the way the baby's heart sounded. So she sent me to the hospital for further testing. When I got there things went so fast. In a matter of minutes they were getting me ready for emergency C-section. Mom had to hurry up and call Kevin at work which was an hour away. They were rushing me in cause the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck.
Kevin arrived 5 minutes after Tyler was born. When they brought me out of recovery they told me that they were going to be taking him to Children's Hospital in Dayton cause he was a preemie and he may have a small opening in the heart. I was in and out so I wasn't really absorbing all the information. I did wake up enough to see my son before they transported him to Children's. I made Kevin and my mother go there to make sure everything checked okay.
They didn't really do anything until the following day. That is when they discovered Tyler had a Hypoplastic Left Heart. I was finally released from the hospital 4 days later and went to see my son on Christmas Day. I got to hold him for the first time. No one else was allowed to hold him until I held him first. Kevin made sure of this.
On January 3 he under went the first part of his surgery. He came through with flying colors. He did really well. He was able to come home on his actual due date Jan.16, 90.
Tyler did well for his condition. Viruses and colds did take them time letting him feel better but he managed the best he could. When he was 9 months old Tyler developed asthma something that I suffer from also. We had to do breathing treatments at home and he was a little trooper. He would sit up on my lap and take it with out any fighting.
Then when Tyler was a year old it was time for his second surgery. They waited to perform this surgery until I graduated from High school early. They did his surgery on Jan.30,91. He did really good through the surgery but the worst was yet to come. They were afraid that he might not be able to be weaned off the respiratory cause of his asthma and the blood circulation to the lungs. Five days later at 5:55 am I awoke from my sleep with the feeling something had happened. Then the phone rang and they said we needed to come over to the hospital right away cause things weren't going so well.
When my mother and I arrived Tyler had pasted away but we didn't know this. They wouldn't let us back there to see him. They asked us to go into another room where the doctor on duty at the time can in and told us the Tyler had passed away. They said they did everything they could but his lungs just gave out.
They asked me if I wanted to hold him and that was the hardest thing I ever had to do. It was hard to sit there and hold my son knowing that this was going to be the last time I was going to hold him. I had to call his daddy and tell him to come to the hospital. That was the hardest phone call I ever had to make.
Tyler we miss you so very much. You will always be in mommy's heart and mind. I love you sweetie.
