Annotated Text


Well, in order to makes us look at least somewhat competant, to organise ideas more and whatever other excuses you care to think up for us we've compiled our own annotated version of the novel. Due to the sheer immensity of the task of annotating, though, it could be a while before anything actually sprouts up here.

Key to the symbols used in this section:

Yeah... the joke is weak at the very best... - Allusions / Analogies. Any doubling or mirroring of anything else, most notably Paradise Lost, Prometheus, The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner and Shelley's life.
- Character Development. Text that shows important traits or developments in any of the characters.
- Feminism. Anything showing women to be either particularly strong or weak (though the latter may crop up in Social Issues)
- Gothic. Anything that contributes to this genre.
- Important Notes. If there's anything that is important to know, but doesn't fit in any of the other sections, it goes here.
- Romantic. Anything that belongs strongly to this genre.
- Society / Social Issues. Basically anything that Shelley voices her opinion on through the novel that was an issue at the time.
- Symbolism. Anything that symbolises something else important.
- Writing Techniques. Shelley's techniques to structure or enhance the novel.
- WTF?. Words and phrases that have dropped from common usage since the novel was written, and information about other people, places and the like that isn't common knowledge.
