| ST. JAMES DEFEATS WOSSMAN OF MONROE IN OVERTIME 14-8 TO WIN 1979 3-A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP |
| By Kenny Hymel Credited: Scotty Bourgeois' article in the Advocate 1979 DECEMBER 7, 1979 The 1979 class 3A state championship was held between St. James and Wossman of Monroe at Wildcat stadium in St. James. Wossman of Monroe would score first and with the 2 point converstion, they would make the game 8-0. Wossman found the end zone on a 48 yard interception return. The Wildcats would answer back with a 12 yard touchdown run by fullback David Charles. Charles would punch in the two point converstion to tie the game at 8-8 in the second quarter. The rest of the game was a defensive battle. Wossman would hold St. James to only 26 rushing yards. St. James would hold Wossman to only 25 passing yards. The game would go on to overtime 8-8. Wossman would win the overtime coin toss and they elected to receive. On a fouth down, Wossman would fumble the snap and the quarterback would pick it up, only to be sacked by Troy Whittington. Quarterback Keith Falgoust took the Wildcats offense to the field and hit Elston Noel on a 2nd and 9, in which Noel took it down to the one yard line. David Charles would punch it in from there for his second touchdown of the game which sealed the victory in overtime. Luckly for the Wildcats, they had overtime. An older rule broke games that were tied based on first downs. In that case, St. James had 13 first downs, and Wossman had 16, therefore, Wossman would of won by first downs. |
