Why is St Jude Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, TN? When struggling with his career, entertainer Danny Thomas prayed to Saint Jude asking for help, and pledged to build a shrine for Saint Jude. As his film and television career flourished he remembered his promise to Saint Jude. So he sought advise from an old friend, Bishop Samuel Cardinal Stritch of Chicago. The Bishop suggested Memphis Tennessee, the reason being that Memphis has an international airport and all major interstate roads go through Memphis. While Danny Thomas was searching Memphis for the right location he came across Hwy 51. He took this as a sign that this is where St Jude should be. Danny's first paycheck was $51.00 per week. His first recording studio was called "Studio 5100". So Danny Thomas founded St Jude Childrens Hospital on Hwy 51 in Memphis Tennessee in 1957. |
