St. Mary's Catholic Learning Community                           September, 2001
WELCOME BACK
It is my pleasure to welcome all the students and staff of St. Mary's Catholic Learning Community to the 2001- 2002 School Year. This promises to be another exciting year filled with new adventures and opportunities for personal development.
I am especially pleased to welcome our new students who are coming to us from other schools, or who are joining us for their first school experience. I hope your years at St. Mary's will be filled with growth, fun and personal enrichment.  On behalf of our school staff, I promise you our very best efforts
in providing an authentic Catholic education of mind, body and spirit.

Ms. White

I am also pleased to welcome our new staff members.  Ms. White will be teaching grade six and Ms. Gilbert will be teaching core French.  Our custodial staff has also changed. We welcome Mr. O'Loughlin and Mr. Thomas to our school community.

NEW PROJECTS

Our Kindergarten and Grade one classes will be focused on a new Early Literacy initiative. This new programmme will see the introduction of Jolly Phonics and a Four Block Model of teaching language.  There will be an additonal emphasis on early identification of literacy difficulties and our Special Education Resource Teacher will work closely with Kindergartens and grade ones.
Our Grade two class will focus on the consolidation of early literacy skills and a refinement of those skills through a variety of practice and assessment strategies.

The consolidation will continue into grade three. Flat Stanley will afford students an opportunity to practice reading and writing skills while engaged in an international, interprovincial, writing project that will include some communication with Ms. Rink's husband aboard a Canadian Coast Guard Ship sailing out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Watch here for pictures.

JUNIOR/INTERMEDIATE ROTARY

School staffs all have teachers who bring various strengths to their classrooms. In an effort to share the strengths of St. Mary's teaching staff we have initiated an intermediate rotary system which will see grades 6, 7 and 8 share the strengths of four different teachers. Ms. White, Ms. Maher, Ms. Collins and Ms. Gilbert. . Watch this space for student reports on Rotary.
