The earliest records of Catholicism in Lone Tree date to 1853. The priest of St. Mary's in Iowa City would travel to Lone Tree when possible to celebrate Mass in a home. In 1874 a 24X38 frame building was completed. Due to a shortage of priests, regular services were not held, only a monthly Mass was celebrated. By 1877, there was a full time pastor assigned to Lone Tree and Nichols. As the community and parish continued to grow there was a need for a larger structure. The new brick church, 84X48, was completed in December of 1914. Many pastors were assigned during the following years at Lone Tree. Rev. Clifford Egert was pastor from 1954 to 1967. Not only did he minister to members of St. Mary's, but he was an early pioneer in ecumenism in the Lone Tree community. Father Egert helped anyone in need and worked on all community projects. Being an excellent carpenter, he with the help of parishioners, built a new brick rectory and office attaching it to the church building. In 1989 St. Mary's was again without a resident pastor due to a shortage of priests. Mrs. Carol Kaalberg was commisioned by Bishop Gerald O'Keefe as the first Parish Life Coordinator for the Diocese of Davenport receiving the appiontment of St. Mary's of Lone Tree and St. Mary's of Nichols and continues to minister in that position as of this time. |
