Steady rains washed out the season opener Friday at Gas City I-69 Speedway, so the St.Myers Racing Team headed east to the Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio. Coming off a runner up feature finish last week, the team was optimistic about their chances for another good run. A very soggy pit area greeted them as the track crew at Limaland done a great job getting the track in racing shape.
With the Modifieds leading the events, Doug and the crew kept busy preparing the 4S for a very heavy track. The luck of the draw produced a start from the pole position in the 4th heat race for the mods. When the green flag flew, it was obvious that Doug would be hard to beat. After a quick yellow, Doug took off like a rocket and kept stretching his lead to over a half straight away at the checkered, winning in convincing fashion.
The redraw was made and the 4S lined up on the outside front row for the 20 lap A main. At the drop of the green, the 5A of Mike Brecht took command as the 33B of Greg Beem passed Doug for the second spot. Several early cautions kept the field bunched up and all the drivers dicing for position. At the mid-race point Doug was still third but working hard on Beem in the 33B on the low side. After clearing Beem, Doug went after the 5A of MikeBrecht. You could see the gap rapidly close from about 10 car lengths as Doug made short work of Brecht, passing him at lap 14. The yellow flew at lap 16, and the 4S and 5A lined up for the 4-lap dash to the finish. Doug went low on the final restart and Brecht put up a whale of a fight for the lead. Doug run his line and pulled away from Brecht by about 4 or 5 car lengths and that is the way they ran to the checkered.
The win was the first of the season for the St.Myers Racing Team, and they look forward to many more to come. Also, the victory puts the 4S into the Limaland "King of the Quarter Mile" later this fall. Way to go Doug!
Doug would like to thank Mike Brecht for racing him very fast and clean. Also, Doug would like to apologize to the 75M of Dusty Moore and 40 of Terry Hull. Doug bounced off the cushion early in the feature, and came down into Dusty. The contact caused Dusty to run into Terry Hull, putting them both out of the feature. Both Dusty and Terry are very good drivers, and Doug felt very bad about the contact.
The Limaland track got a lot of rain earlier in the day, and the facilities track crew turned out a very smooth and fast racetrack. Hats off to them for providing such a nice place to race.
