Did You Know? / Saiyan History

Goku and Raditz's father is called Bardock, and is seen in a Dragonball Z TV special. Bardock is not an not an elite Saiyan but a powerful warrior. Bardock and the rest of the Saiyans became too powerful for Frieza and Frieza has to dispose of them. These special TV shows have not been shown in the UK, but if you're American or Japanese you'll know what I'm talking about (or if you were lucky enough to see it!).

Saiyans love food, especially Goku and Gohan.

The blood of true Saiyans affects their need for a challenge. While we can see this in Vegeta easily, Goku also likes a challenge. Gohan seems to be a little less blood thirsty than the others though.

In the TV special, the Bardock one, we see Planet Vegeta being destroyed. Remember when Frieza talks to his father about how he destroyed the Planet Vegeta and you see clips of the Saiyans trying to reason with Frieza? Well, in the TV special, after it was destroyed, a new Planet Vegeta was created. But unlucky as they were, that planet was destroyed as well!

It takes 17 million zeno units per second to be absorbed by a Saiyan to transform into an Oozaru . This radiation is found in a full moon, that reflects green-spectrum radiation. It is possible to generate and therefore compress this energy in a 'power ball,' which Vegeta does when fighting Goku in the Saiyan Saga.

Planet Vegeta used to be inhabited by two races of people. There were the Tuffles, who were intelligent, 'refined' people and there were the brutal Saiyans. The Saiyans lived away from the cities in barren wastelands, in a primitive fashion. All Saiyans have tails, and they all love to fight! One day, the Saiyans attacked the Tuffles, and although they were superior in size and strength, the Tuffles had excellent technology that gave them the upper hand in the battle (they were the ones that invented Scouters!). But as the battle went into the night, the Saiyans transformed into Giant Apes and destroyed the cities. The planet was then renamed Vegeta, and the Saiyans gained control of the Tuffle's technology and wealth. The Saiyans began a new system whereby they would conquer planets and then hand it over to whoever payed them to do the job. The Saiyans became renown throughout the universe, and they began to send out their young babies to distance planets, knowing that one day they would grow up and be able to destroy the planet's inhabitants. Goku was one such child, but he had a large fall when he was little and it made him forget his mission.

Transformations / Fusions

While Saiyans may seem powerful in their normal state, their true powers lie within their ability to transform. Goku tells Buu the different stages of Saiyan transformations.

Super Saiyan (SSJ, SS, Super Saiya-jin)

When a Saiyan transforms into a Super Saiyan, their hair turns a bright yellow (the gold is in fact shadowing). Their eyes turn green, and they become much more powerful than a normal Saiyan. All strength, speed and energy is increased, overall giving the effect of an energy - boosted Saiyan. Goku was the first to turn into SSj (short for Super Saiya-jin, the Japanese equivalent) form, when Frieza killed Krillin and made Goku mad.

Those who can achieve this level are: Goku, Vegeta, Trunks (Future and Present), Gohan, Goten and Gotenks.

Ascended Super Saiyan (USSj, USS, Ultra Super Saiya-jin)

During the time when Goku, Gohan, Trunks and Vegeta were training for the Cell Games, the level of the Ascended Saiyan was reached. Also known as the Ultimate Super Saiyan, the ascended Saiyan was much like the normal Super Saiyan except for one main attribute; his strength was increased dramatically. The ascended Super Saiyan is the point at which the the Super Saiyan has reached his ultimate power in the Super Saiyan transformation. While his strength increases dramatically, the large size of the muscles slow up the fighter considerably. This was discovered by Trunks when he fought Imperfect Cell.

Those who can achieve this level are: Goku, Vegeta and Future Trunks.

Super Saiyan 2 (SSj2, SS2, Super Saiya-jin 2)

In Super Saiyan 2 form, the Saiyan’s hair becomes a bit longer and the hair seems to glow more violently, showing more power. Once again, the 2nd level of Super Saiyans is of much higher power, and the Saiyan obtains a significant amount more of energy. Gohan was the first Saiyan (well, half Saiyan) to reach the stage of SS2 when fighting Cell, and due to this transformation Cell was defeated. Trunks may have gained power by becoming an ascended SS, but he lacked in speed. However, SS2 form, not only
gives the Saiyan immense power, but still holds their incredible speed.

Those who can achieve this level are: Gohan, Goku, Vegeta and Vegetto.

Super Saiyan 3 (SSj3, SS3, Super Saiya-jin 3)

Goku was the first to transform into the SS3 form. While your power, speed and agility are all boosted highly, it drains a lot of energy from the Saiyan. This tires them out quite quickly. To turn into a SS3, you must tap into your energy that is hidden deep within you. A SS3 grows long hair, down to their legs (almost anyway).

Those who can achieve this level are: Goku and Gotenks

Oozaru

The Saiyan's primitive version of a transformation. Any Saiyan can transform into an Oozaru' s long as they have a tail, and the light of the moon shines on them. Goku crushed his grandfather when he was young and when was in Oozaru state. Vegeta learned to control himself in this form, but Gohan couldn't and neither could Goku. Both had their tail chopped off. But wait you say! What about Vegeta? Yajirobe chopped that off for him!

Oozaru' s are big and strong, but lack speed and agility. They can be clumsy as well. An Oozaru looks like a big ape, and it's this that makes them clumsy. The transformation was never used again after the Saiyan Saga in DBZ.
