Known superhuman powers: Colossus is a mutant with the ability to convert his tissue into an organic, steel-like substance -- granting him extraordinary strength and a high degree of resistance to bodily harm. In armored form, he is nearly invulnerable and does not need to breathe or eat.
History: Piotr Rasputin, born on a Siberian farm, suffered the regular prejudice once his mutant power manifested. When the original X-Men were kidnapped, Professor Charles Xavier invited Rasputin to join his new team. The young mutant agreed to leave the farming community in which he was born and raised for a life of adventure in America. As Colossus, Rasputin joined Xavier's other new recruits in their battle against the sentient island Krakoa. Together, they rescued the original X-Men.
Colossus' life has been rocked by great trauma: His Cosmonaut brother, Mikhail, was trapped for a time in an alternate dimension; his sister -- Illyana, the original Magik -- died from the Legacy Virus. After a battle with Magneto, Colossus left the X-Men and joined the Acolytes, the Master of Magnetism's disciples. When Holocaust, a mutant refugee from the Age of Apocalypse reality, destroyed the asteroid haven Magneto built to separate himself and his followers from the humans, Colossus returned to Earth. He then started searching for his dear friends: Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) and Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), with whom he once had been romantically involved. When Rasputin found his dear Kitty kissing her then-boyfriend, Peter Wisdom, he nearly beat the other man to death in a jealous rage. Excalibur, England's premier team of heroes, took in Colossus as part of his rehabilitation. He came to accept his role and remained until the group's dissolution, whereupon he returned with Kitty and Kurt to the States to rejoin the X-Men.

Recently, Beast discovered the long-awaited cure to the fatal legacy virus, but at the stage in development could only be released to others if fatally injected into a mutant.  In the effort to prevent any mroe deaths form the virus, Colossus injected himself, thereby saving a world of victims from the ravages of the Legacy virus.
