Wellassa is the name used locally for this area, which means hundred thousand paddy fields, and during the heydays of Sinhala Kings, when this area flourished it was covered with lush green paddy fields, which made Sri Lanka the grannary of the east! Cultivation is still the main occupation of the folks around here |
Above right is my house - "Jungle Patch" so named after my nickname "JP". We have very basic facilities for back packers, you can enjoy our life style and my wife's home cooking. The house is in Wellawaya on Moneragala Road to Arugum Bay, any Tuk-Tuk will bring you here from Wellawaya Junction just mention - It's the Poultry Farm place. |
The Hadapangala herd of Elephants have made this area famous with Tourists, its the sugar cane and the waters of the Hadapangala Tank which draws over 150 Elephants to this area. |
