The Sugarcubes
The Sugarcubes
Sykurmolar, or in English, The Sugarcubes, formed in Iceland in 1986 and were comprised of Bjork, her then husband Thor Eldon, Bragi Olafsson, Siggi Baldursson Einer Orn Benediktsson, and later, Thor's second wife Magga Olafssdottir.
They were a strange blend of pop, punk, indie, rock and dance.
Their first album
'Life's Too Good', was released in 1988 and contained the immensely strange, beautiful and popular first single 'Birthday'.
The album was met with critical acclaim, UK music mag 'Melody Maker' named
'Birthday' single of the week.
Their second album
'Here Today Tomorrow Next Week', released in 1989 was not as successfull as the first, by this time, people were beginning to get a bit fed up with Einar's growling and carrying on over Bjork's marvellous vocals.
The Sugarcubes toured the world, packing out shows world-wide, even as far away from Iceland as Australia.
The Sugarcubes' third and final album,
'Stick Around For Joy', released in 1991, was successful, although Steve Fox's glossed over production work tended to smooth over the idiosyncratic sounds of the group.
A remix album entitled
'It's It' was released in 1992.
In 1993 Bjork started what was to become her extremely successful solo career.
In 1998, a gretest hits titled,
'The Great Crossover Potential', was released, to genneral appraisal.
