Wendy Rule and her enticing, atmospheric, Pagan music has enticed and entranced her ever-growing audience, both on disc and in her live performances. One of Australia's most innovative artists, Wendy's songs combine Paganism, mythology and irrestistible melodies. Her remarkable voice soaring over music and octaves with seemingly effortless grace and beauty. Wendy is a Wiccan, a witch. Her music weaves stories of the universe, mythology, Gods and Goddesses with a sort of sonic theatre. Her stage shows are magnificent mergings of music and magic. She first became interested in performing at high school in the school plays, she soon realised that applause is addictive. In the Early 90's, Wendy began singing with Jazz Rock bands, she also started writing her own songs. Wendy entered the studio to record her solo stuff in 1995 with cellist Rachel Samuel and keyboardist Craig Patterson. Approximately nine months later, here debut album 'Zero', was released to critical acclaim and strong sales. A remarkable feat from a purely indepent act. To date, 'Zero' has sold over 5,000 copies. The albums opening track, 'Continental Isolation' was released as a single later that year. In 1997 Wendy released a new song, 'Artemis' and also a cover of Echo and The Bunnymen's 'The Killing Moon'. A live album was also released. The follow-up album to 'Zero', was 'Deity' it was produced by Simon Polinski and was released in 1998. 'Deity' was given a three star review in Australia's issue of 'Rolling Stone' magazine, and was described in the review as "Dark, sensual sonic theatre in the vein of Kurt Weil....compelling stuff....!" Wendy had, by this stage, attracted the attention of some of Melbourne's hottest artists playing live with the likes of Kerri Simpson, Rebecca Barnard of 'Rebecca's Empire', Shane o'Mara, amongst others. She even opened for 'Donovan' when he was touring Australia. A year or two later, Wendy started working on her third album, 'World Between Worlds', which was released in the year 2000. She also concieved, produced and performed a theatrical production called 'An Underworld Journey' which featured several new songs that were captured on 'World Between Worlds'. Wendy has called 'World Between Worlds' her "Most Honest" album so far. On 'World Between Worlds' most of the instruments were played by Wendy's backing Band, 'The Parallel Dreams'. Wendy says, "I hope people let themselves go with this album. That they let themselves be taken by it. It's very much an album to journey with". |
