| The Strolling Silver Strings The Strolling Silver Strings is a joint presentation of the Music Education and Programs for the Gifted of Norfolk Public School’s. The members of this ensemble are students in the five Norfolk High Schools. They are selected by audition and meet for one rehearsal each week. Heidi Kirby, Administrative Director is also the accompanist. The Musical Director is Mr. Paul Wilson Jr. Since being formed in 1986, the Silver Strings have presented over 750 performances and average 60 performances yearly at various civic, political, military, business and charity events. Some of the events they’ve performed for: Governor Warner’s Inaugural Open House Governor Wilder’s Inaugural Gala The U.S. Naval Academy International Maritime Conference The National School Board Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana The Canadian Embassies Annual Foreign Dignitaries Dinner VA. Chamber of Commerce’s 75th Anniversary Gala Virginia Legislatures Reception The Capital Rotunda in Richmond/ General Assembly Sessions Holiday Christmas Specials on Channel 13, 11, and 47 Virginia Music Educators State Conference 1988, 1992, 2000 Azalea Queen’s Dinner and Dance Southeastern Association of School Business Officials Leukemia Society Annual Fundraiser Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Annual Holly Ball American Heart Association Annual Heart Ball Operation Smile’s Annual fundraising dinner Joint performance with the Air Force Strolling Silver Strings The Kiwanis International Convention in Miami, Florida June 2000 The Lion’s Club Annual Conference State PTA Convention November 2000 Council of Great City Schools National Conference VH1 Grant Presentation World Affairs Council Performance tours to France, Italy, and Switzerland in 1991, 1995, and 1998 As member’s of their school orchestras, the students have a background of traditional concert performance, but as “strollers”, they leave the stage and move into the audience where each player becomes a soloist as well as an entertainment personality. |
