LOVERING

LOVERING is definitely one of the latest new AOR sensations. Their debut CD 'Calm before the storm' is a fantastic pure AOR record. A must for fans of bands like ROKBOX, HONEYMOON SUITE, ALIAS... I had an interview with bandleader Brian Lovering, let's see what he has to say...

PLEASE INTRODUCE US YOUR BAND, WHEN DID YOU FORM LOVERING AND DID ANY OF YOU PLAYED IN BANDS BEFORE LOVERING?

Lovering was formed in May 199 which is when I first met my singer Doug Martin. He answered an ad that I
had placed in a local paper when I was searching for a vocalist to record with. My bass player on "Calm
before the Store", Sean Gregory, is actually the bass player for another toronto band called EMERALD RAIN.
He does all of my bass tracks in the studio. We have been friends for 15 years. As far as playing in other
bands we all have played in bands around the Toronto area before but this was our first collaboration
together with an all original project.

CAN YOU TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR FANTASTIC DEBUT CD "CALM BEFORE THE STORM"?

"Calm before the storm" was really a process of trying to narrow down from a stack of songs I had written to 10 songs that we all felt were the strongest songs. It is a hard process sometimes when you have to narrow down to 10 or 12 songs that will make the album. We feel pasionately about the chioces of songs that we did pick and hopefully our fans will too.

YOUR MUSIC IS PURE 80S AOR, WHICH BANDS INFLUENCED YOU?

I have heard that quite a bit from different people that our music sounds like "80's AOR". As far as musical styles that have influenced me it's really a wide variety of music that I have been influenced by. It does not even necessarily come across in my music what I have grown up listening to and being influenced by. Everything from pop/rock to R & B to contemporary. I think more than sounding like people I've listened to and been influenced by, its really just taught me to try to be creative with what I do write. There is so much great music out there to be
inspired by.

DO YOU THINK YOUR KIND OF MUSIC (80'S AOR) WILL EVER COME BACK AND BECOME AS HUGE BACK IN THE 80'S?

It's hard to say. Music in my point of view, tends to be very cyclical. Who's hot one year is not necessarily popular 2 years from now. I think 80's AOR was a really strong period of music and produced a lot of great bands so hopefully it will resurface and be as popular as it was in the 80's.

HOW HAS THE CD BEEN RECEIVED, LOTS OF POSITIVE REACTIONS....

The CD has been received very well. There has been a lot of positive feedback and encouraging things said
about it which is nice to hear. When you put so much effort and energy into something it is very gratifying and really means a lot to us.

ARE YOU ALREADY WORKING ON A NEW CD, IF SO CAN YOU TELL US EVERYTHING ABOUT IT? POSSIBLE SONGS PRODUCTION, SAME MUSIC STYLE AS ON "CALM BEFORE THE STORM" WHEN IT IS GOING TO BE RELEASED ETC... ETC..?

We are currently writing and demoing songs for the next record. As far as production and musical style go it is similar but of course not exactly the same. Most of the elements will be there as far as production and style go but with a few new twists. The release date has yet to be determined but it will be in the near future. Stay tuned!!

WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE NEXT COMING MONTHS?

As I said we are currently demoing new songs and just getting our pre-production together. I am also currently moving into a new house so we are trying to have my studio from my old house to the new house without damaging any equipment. It's a lot of work.

FINALLY, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD TO OUR READERS?

I would just like to thank all of our fans which bought "Calm before the storm" and hopefully people who have not heard it will get a chance to check it out.
