HOT NEW AOR REVIEWS

CHRISTMAS UPDATE

SURRENDER 'FULL CIRCLE'
(PRO DIGITAL RECORDS)

This SURRENDER (do not confuse them with the 80s bands with the same name please!) are coming out of the New York area. 'Full circle' is their third CD and definitely not an album you can miss if you're a fan of 80s AOR/Melodic Rock. On backing vocals we can hear HUGO, so there you have it, an interesting name and the man also co-wrote a song. The production by Michael Phillip Costanzo (HALL AND OATES, 98 DEGREES) is very good and also most of the songs sound pretty good. The band toured as support act for bands like VAUGHN, DANGER DANGER and many others. There are some clear similarities to HUGO, JOURNEY and ALDO NOVA to be heard on the band's new CD. It's not only pure AOR what we get to hear, because there are also some DANGER DANGER typed melodic rockers on the album.

Most of all I would like to compare this band to AIRKRAFT, an 80s outfit who basically played the same style as this SURRENDER. You really get something for your money as the CD counts 15 tracks and none of them are fillers. My favourite tracks are "Until you" (pure 80s uptempo AOR like AGENT meets AVIATOR), "Do you think about me" (uptempo melodic rocker a la DANGER DANGER), "My baby and me" (another uptempo melodic rocker), "It's real" (great AOR ballad), "Heavens not that far" (uptempo AOR), "Where do we go from here" (uptempo melodic rocker) and the JOURNEY inspired piano-led AOR ballad "Silence says it all".

This SURRENDER has delivered a good rocking AOR/Melodic Rockalbum that is
recommended to people who enjoy both the softer AOR sounds of HUGO and the rockier melodic sound of AIRKRAFT and DANGER DANGER. More info at:
http://www.surrender.net Now there's for me only one thing to do and that's looking for the band's previous two records, hopefully I can review them also and if all goes well we'll also add an interview with these guys on our site pretty soon.

SHOOTING STAR 'LEAP OF FAITH' (V & R RECORDS)

I remember well, the first time I heard the song LAST CHANCE from this classic band. It's still one off the best pompsongs ever made and this song was the main reason I became a fan of AOR/POMP music. So, SHOOTING STAR has a special place in my heart because they were a bit responsable I got into this kind of music, and I sure don't regret this.

After their magnificent live release some 4 years ago it (again) became very quiet round this band. The reason (I heard), was the illness off Van McLain, together with Ron Verlin, the only original member. I've really looked forward to this release and after seeing the cover, which strong reminds to the cover off their second release Hang On For Yor Love (1981), I hoped they would return to their music style like on their 5 first albums. Well, after hearing this new release, I must admit that my hopes are only partial fulfilled. OK, like in the past, we hear again a mix of no nosense hardrocksongs ( I JUST WANNA ROCK, SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY, FACE TO FACE, FIND A WAY), ballads ( titlesong, CALL IT LOVE) and some more melodic songs with minor AOR and POMP influences.

Also worth to mention is that the band re-introduces a violin player, but only as a guest appearance. Great to hear, because this instrument always was a kind of characteristic from SHOOTING STAR, especially on their first albums. The best songs in my opninion are IF YOU WANT ME ( melodic up tempo rocksong with lots piano and violin and an impressive instrumental part at the end), HUNGRY EYES ( semi ballad which reminds me a bit to the SILENT SCREAM period), PROMISES ( the most AORisch song with catchy chorus), CALL IT LOVE (beautiful ballad) and last but not least, the final and best song called HIGHER POWER (mid tempo semi ballad with a fine mix of guitars, violin and piano).

Concluding, except for the 4 earlier mentioned rockers, I like the album but am a bit disappointed because I hoped for some more pomprock, but you can't have it all. Anyway, I'm very happy that SHOOTING STAR are still alive and kicking and hopefully we have not to wait another 9 years for another studio album.

WESTWORLD 'SKIN' (ROADRUNNER)

Never thought to see or better hear a second release from this project. This because the two leading persons behind Westworld, singer Tony Harnell and guitarplayer Mark Reale, are also busy with their main bands TNT and RIOT, and also because I think and heard the debut wasn't really a topseller. Please, don't misunderstand me. Westworld's debut was and still is a great album and never got the appreciation it deserved.

Like on the debut, Westworld continues in the same style and delivers again a very varied album. Tony Harnell's, in my opinion still one of the best vocalists in the melodic hardrock genre, singing is very impressive and Mark Reales guitarplaying is always very melodic and sometimes even sensitive, not comparable with what he's doing with RIOT.

Again, there's a fine mix from up-tempo hardrocksongs, mid tempo tunes and ballads. Sometimes you can hear some modern (or alternative) sounds, but never to much and every song has a nice melodic chorus. Personally I think there's no weak song on the entire album and I must admit that I like it more than the last efforts from TNT and RIOT. To name some favourites, there's UNEASY (the most AORisch sounding song), LIMBO (killer ballad with very emotional singing), OUT THERE (maybe the best song on this release with great chorus) and the very well done Alanis Morisette cover UNINVITED, with again very impressive singing.

Also, the other six songs are allright. Don't expect AOR, but high quality melodic rock with some minor alternative sounds, good singing and great guitarplaying, just listen to the guitarsolo at the end off the title song and you'll agree. At this moment, I think WESTWORLD is sounding more than TNT itself and people who liked WESTWORLD's debut will sure like this album. I sure enjoyed it.

TIGRIS 'TIGRIS'
(PANTHERA TIGRIS MUSIC)

TIGRIS is a band out of Australia and the sent me their same titled debut CD. The CD starts as a very 90s rock-sounding album, but happily later on we are definitely falling into 80s typed melodic rock. The songs "Kiss me", "Mother" and "Shake up" didn't do anything for me and I thought I had to pass on this release. But then things started to become much better on the songs "Fallin'", "Shoot the gun" and "Lady". The first two are great uptempo melodic rockers in the style of the old BON JOVI, while the last track is one of the highlights of this record. "Lady" is a duet with a female vocalist (couldn't find her name unfortunately) and together they sing very well on this great midtempo AOR song. Next up are the weaker songs "Let's talk about…" and "Devil woman". "In the night" then again is a nice uptempo melodic rocker. The CD closes with "Sugar honey", another song that is nothing special. This CD has ups and downs and I would rather hear some more melodic rock on a future CD instead of the 90s inspired rock. For now, check out their site at: http://www.go.to/meridianstar and e-mail them at: meridian_star@start.com.au

SPYDER 'VARIOUS ITEMS' (INDEPENDENT)

American vocalist/guitarist SPYDER sent me a couple of items from him from the past. First off a tape from 1988 that includes two songs. Musically this is very good mid 80s keyboard driven AOR, especially the song "Realitee's calling" is a great song, the other track "One more time" is a simpler uptempo rocker a la SILVER CONDOR. Things really get starting to become sensational for SPYDER when he is playing in the band EVOLUTION. He recorded 7 songs with this band back in 1992 and after hearing them, I think SPYDER should consider re-releasing them. Actually the songs have never been released and that's a pity as this is pure AOR and SPYDER's best work. Let me talk about the songs over here. The tape starts with "Move along", a nice semi rocker a la REO SPEEDWAGON. This first track also has a cool keyboardsolo's and contains some 70s Pomp elements.

Up next is the superb classy early 80s uptempo AOR rocker "Way back to you". This amazing song with it's great harmonies, catchy hooks and JOURNEY typed chorus is making this song a winner for the fans of perfect 80s AOR! If SPYDER would make more songs in this style and put it on CD, then it would be one of the best releases of the past few years!!! Things cool down a bit on the following track, "No escape:, a nice AOR/Pomp ballad. "She likes to rock and roll" is the first weaker song, this is just average rock'n'roll. "Arise on time" is much better again and takes us into BOSTON territory. Then we are right back into AOR HEAVEN with the song "Ever gonna end". This song is so incredibly HUGE, man, I can not believe this is not been released, because it is a song that needs to be heard by every AOR fan on planet earth. "Ever gonna end" is superb classic AOR a la WHITE SISTER, and the chorus of the song is pure AOR HEAVEN!

The tape closes nicely with the good uptempo AOR/Poprocker "Flye". I didn't expect that this EVOLUTION tape of Spyder's former band would bring me in some sort of 'AOR coma'. The only thing I hope that SPYDER is smart enough to bring this to the European AOR labels, because it wouldn't surprise me if one of them would actually release this after untouched for 8 years! Anyway, further I also hope SPYDER will re-consider playing the AOR rocker of EVOLUTION all over again on a future solo record, 'cause he also sent me his recent solo CD 'The dark and the light'.

And unfortunately this solo record of him has absolutely nothing to do with the AOR of EVOLUTION. The album of SPYDER is filled with acoustic driven rockabilly and average pop/rock. The only song that I could really listen to was the uptempo poprocker "Push the fear" in it's 70s style a fine track. The rest has absolutely nothing to do with AOR or Rock in general. I really hope something is going to happen with the awesome AOR of Spyder's former band EVOLUTION as it would be a shame if it didn't. For now, you can check out SPYDER at: http://www.spyder-rock.com and e-mail him at: spyder@spyder-rock.com

PROSPECT 'PROGRESSIVE FORCE' (INDEPENDENT)

PROSPECT is a band from Slovenija, and as far as I know, the only other Melodic Rockband from that country was SHANK ROCK, although that band was very commercial sounding (a la EUROPE, BON JOVI). This PROSPECT is playing melodic heavy rock with some progessive influences. Most of the songs are uptempo and in the same style, so if you like one, you'll love them all. The band also has clearly been influenced by 80s acts and comparisons to QUEENSRYCHE and DREAM THEATHER are easy to make at times, but the Hard Rock of PROSPECT is sounding a lot more straight-ahead. Also the use of keyboards is making the music of PROSPECT very melodic. My favourite tracks are "Running away" (uptempo melodic rocker a la PINK CREAM 69) and the melodic rockballad "Silent screamer". This band sounds very professional and they wouldn't be out of place on the Limb Music Recordlabel. More info on the band at: http://www.prospect-music.com and e-mail them at: contact@prospect-music.com

ROB BROWN 'RB3/THE MAN OF THE HOUSE' (INDEPENDENT)

Vocalist/guitarist/drummer Rob Brown comes out of Bloomsburg, USA and he sent me two of his solo records. The first one is called 'The man of the house', an album released in 1997. This CD starts with the semi melodic rocker "Who has this affected". The following tracks are a bit weak, but during the middle of the CD things get really interesting with some quality melodic poprockers such as "Your kinda man", "The way I feel today", "Blinded by the moonlight", "Straighten up boy" and "The key". These songs are pretty nice to hear and are reminding me of the early 80s (read EDDIE MONEY, RICK SPRINGFIELD and BRYAN ADAMS). On the other hand you also get to hear some acoustic tingled pop/rock such as "Time to fly" and "Love always finds a way" that didn't do much for me.

The new CD of ROB BROWN is called 'RB3' and follows the same route. Things start with a nice poprocker "A day late and a dollar short" (could've been a songtitle for ALICE COOPER). Then we get to hear some weaker songs such as "Tom Adams", "Distressed and disabled" and "Fire from the sky". The last two songs are pretty good, these are the semi ballad "Destiny" and the late 70s typed melodic rocker "The American way" (a la RICK DERRINGER). Though I think Rob's previous album is much better, there's still something of interesting to check out on his upcoming new CD. Recommended to fans of westcoast tingled melodic poprock (TOM PETTY meets BRYAN ADAMS). Website: http://www.mp3.com/robbrown and e-mail: robbrown@musician.net

LEMON CELLO 'LEMON CELLO' (LCR RECORDS)

Band out of San Francisco and this is their debut CD. The album counts 8 songs and musically we are drifting away from our beloved 80s melodic rock style as this LEMON CELLO is playing pure 90s Rock. The only song that caught my attention was the 70s influenced rocker "Someone else's day", but the rest is just too 90s rock for me. If you're into that type of rock, then this LEMON CELLO might be interesting as they throw in some good melodies in their songs, only it has nothing to do with melodic rock or AOR. JACOB MARLEY 'WHAT THE DICKENS??' (INDEPENDENT)

JACOB MARLEY comes out of North Carolina and is the name of a band and not from an artist. 70s Hard Rock acts such as DEEP PURPLE, URIAH HEEP and BLACK SABBATH have influenced them. Musically it indeed sounds like these bands a little, although I must add here that most of the songs sound like demos from the early 70s! So nothing updated here, but I guess there are people out there who might want to check out a pure 70s sounding band.

The Classic Hard Rock of the band doesn't sound bad, but I think the sound and production quality is just too weak to give it a really good listen. If you like the slow early 70s sound of BLACK SABBATH, and don't mind a weaker sound quality, then you might check out JACOB'S MARLEY at: http://www.lowerroomproductions.com and e-mail them at: rsteagall@carolina.net

SHOOTING STAR 'LEAP OF FAITH' (V AND R RECORDS)

I've been waiting for this album for a long time, almost ten years have passed since the bands excellent last release 'It's Not Over' and you know what, with 'Leap Of Faith' it's as if the band have never been away from us, great hard hitting songs are in abundence which starts off with the opening track 'I Just Wanna Rock' which echos Def Leppard style chorus lines and hooklines, a great song that is very very catchy. 'I Need Your Touch' is even better, listen and you will hear that this song sounds like House Of Lords and Winger, particularly Van McLain's vocals which lie somewhere between Kip Winger and James Christian, this is one of my favourite songs on the album, it's just melodic.

The next song is a classic AOR number in the style of old Shooting Star and Giuffria 'If You Want It' features some wonderful keys coated with commericalised melodies, a killer song that leads into the title track, now this song is calmer a'la Restless Heart and Survivor and is pure AOR to die for, the way McLain sings this song is beautiful. Next up is the rockier 'She Drives Me Crazy', and oh boy what a corker the band have scored with House Of Lords circa 'Demons Down' esq track, total melodic bliss.

'Face To Face' on the otherhand is pure seventies AOR with Jimi Jamison flavoured vocals, the album then drops in place for the slowburning 'Hungry Eyes' which is a really fab infectious pop ballad in the Survivor mould. The guitars crank up once again for 'Love Is A Shield' a great melodic rocker.

Another favourite track lies in the hands of the truly excellent 'Promises', and like 'Need Your Touch' echos of House Of Lords, Survivor and Winger and is a stunning song that is very easy to singalong to. Another Giuffria, Survivor esq ballad pops up next called 'Call It Love' this is a strong ballad that is set to make the AOR mafia foam at theri mouths, once again McLain sings magnificintley. 'Find A Way' is a cool steady AOR/melodic rocker with commerical values and the last song 'Higher Power' is another winner, very much in the Journey , Dare, Giuffria tradition a strong song that ends the album on a high note.

What a great little album 'Leap Of Faith' is, and one that should hopefully gain Shooting Star the respect they truly deserve. Listen if you like bands like The VU, Two Fires, The Storm, Survivor, Giuffria and just good music in general then be sure to buy this album as it is indeed one of this years top albums, lets hope that we don't have to wait as long for the bands next release. Essential!!!

FAIR GAME 'BEAUTY AND THE BEAST' (METAL MAYHEM MUSIC)

Another blast from the past - Fair Game sees the return of frontman Ron Keel, this much talked about project was due to come out a few years back, but because of the impact of grunge music it has taken until now for the album to see the light of day thanks to those guys at Metal Mayhem Music who are fast becoming a great source for eighties hard rock bands.

Fair Game features Mr.Keel posing with his band, four absolutely stunning chicks, the bastard!! Yes folks this is Ron's ego going into overdrive, but you know these chicks can fire up a storm and are marvelous musicians, especially Tina Listo who shreds like a demon a'la Steve Vai and Ted Nugent. The album kicks off with a short medley of Keel hits, and the first song, the title track bombards it's way through thick guitar riffs and mega killer chorus lines, it['s like Vixen or Phantom Blue but with a male singer, meanwhile as track three pumps it's mighty compounds it's here that the band really fire on all ten cylinders, this is a storming song and the chorus has a Van Halen (Hagar years feel), my favourite track so far. Next up is 'Street Of Broken Dreams', another fantastic melodic rock song in the Bon Jovi vein, this song is very radio friendly and is just fantastic, the chorus hits you from the first play - another winner.

'Let It Rain' is a stronger mature song with lovely melodies and vocal harmonies from Ron whilst 'Somewhere In The Night' is a fantastic ballad with a big AOR chorus a gentle guitar work from Tina. It' back to the top of the rock with 'Blind Faith' a song which was written by Tommy Thayer and Marc Ferrai, thus comes across like Black N' Blue and Cold Sweat, whilst the sleazy 'Down N' Dirty' bounces along in old school Keel fashion. Lastly the ballad 'Time Of My life' leaves you really wanting more. Fair Game is a fantastic album, I really hope that Ron and the girls get to make another album like this as Fair Game real do have tons of potential, plus add to the fact they actually sound original against alot of current releases, recommended!!!

WHITE WIDOW 'TURN IT UP'
(METAL MAYHEM MUSIC)

If you look hard enough you can find some real gems on the internet like this little beauty from the much touted White Widow. White Widow play pure American hard rock, heavy riffs, gritty vocals, anthemic chrouses etc.etc.. a metal fans dream. This long overdue album features ten songs in the Ratt, Keel, TKO, Motley Crue vein, one of my favourite song is the track 'Somethin' That You Do To Me' the chorus is dead catchy and very melodic, as the saying goes had this come out in the eighties, MTV would have been all over this song.

The title track itself is fun time heavy metal, killer chanting vocals from Brian Spindler and big fat gigantic riffs from D.D. Felly and Johnny Larson, whilst 'United We Stand' and 'Fallin In And Out Of Love' are the albums power ballads with the latter being the best of the two reminding me of Warrant and Babylon A.D.

White Widow are a killer band with loads of killer song and this is an essential album!!

MELODICA 'ACOUSTICA' (FRONTIERS/NOW AND THEN RECORDS)

OK, maybe I screwed up on my review of the debut Melodica album, but it was such a delight to here Poley's voice again that I just totally overlooked the sound quality of the album, mind you at times Poley did sound a little out of tune on that album, however I'm happy to report that the second Melodica album is in fact very good and I think the band might have had an easier time with the press had they released 'Acoustica' first.

As the title says, this is an acoustic version of 'Long Way From Home', but not the whole album, there are six songs lifted from 'L.W.F.H', and six new ones are also included making this value for money. The thing is with the songs played in this style is that they all sound more polished than on the 'L.W.F.H', thus the album gives the chance for Poley's fans to truly here him sing as you have never heard him before. His voice carries each song with amazing heartfelt delivery, were talking almost 'One Step From Paradise' here folks!!

Whilst most acoustic albums come accross boring (eg Von Groove's recent release), this one works perfectly. So lets take a look at the new songs before I bore you all to death. 'Missing You' is a lovely ballad, Ted will really amaze his fans here, as will the next new song 'Believe In Your Heart' a wonderful song sung with killer harmonies, 'Anisha' is next, I think this could be one of the Bone Machine songs but I can't really remember at the moment as my friend has the cd, but I do recognisee the song, here Ted sings in a similar range to Savannah's Earle Lord, this song is a bit of a classic.

'Summer Nights' is next and is deliverd as you would expect, with great little acoustic ditties from Gerhard Pichler.'Broken Promises' is also very very good, just listen to the delivery of that voice, brilliant!!. That leaves one more song, 'Love Metal', there was a story behind this track which someone told me at onetime of which I can't remember now, but this is a killer song in the Bon Jovi vein, actually this reminds me of Bon Jovi's 'Never Say Goodbye' in a way, only more uptempo anyway a great song which Ted's fans will love to bits. I hope that Melodica get to make another album like this as it really shows what an amazing singer Ted Poley really is, respect where respect is due.

In summery, 'Acoustica' is possibly one of the best acoustic albums since Kip Winger's 'Made By Hand' and Firehouse's 'Good Acoustics'.

ROB ROCK 'RAGE OF CREATION' (MASSACRE)

With metal's man of the moment Roy Z-producing, co-writing & playing guitar-aboard, Rob
Rock(Vice/Joshua/Impellitteri/Mars)finally steps out into the light in his own right.

Combining elements of Queen-the 'Flash Gordon' soundtrack feel of instrumental opener 'In the beginning'; Iron Maiden, especially the 'Wasted Years' Smith and Murray vibe of 'Streets of Madness'; a more metal Joshua, the rampaging 'One way out'; a melodic Nevermore on the twists and turns of 'Judgment Day'-'Rage of Creation is a classic hard rock/metal album, with Rock's commanding, world class vocals directing proceedings with ease.

This album dovetails melody with considerable crunch-especially when Jake E.Lee joins the fray, and a stunning Dio-esque version of Abba's 'Eagle'( As a tangent an awful lot of rock artists are covering Abba songs,is it some form of guarded homage to Agnetha's curves?)makes a welcome appearance, and confirms my long-held view that Rob Rock should forge ahead on his own. Great stuff.

FREEDOM CALL 'CRYSTAL EMPIRE' (SPV)

Fans of Helloween, Virigin Steele, Manowar and German power metal should enjoy this new album from Freedom Call.

The first track after a short intro is called 'Freedom Call' and is a powerful chanting number in the typical eighties tradition, even perhaps sounding like Iron Maiden at times, still 'Freedom Call' is very addictive and you'll be singing along to this song as soon as the chorus hits, no further spins needed, a pretty easy song to get into, especially as most songs in this genre seem to take a few spins to get into, thus 'Fredom Call' serves as a great start to the album, the band keep it simple which sets them apart from many of the other power metal lumunries.

'Rise Up' continues in this vein and reminds me of Helloween circa 'Keeper Part Two', whilst 'Farewell' has an almost goodtime feel, the riffs are very colourful and the lyrics and chorus come straight out of the Helloween lyric book.

The anthemic metal of 'Pharao' plods along in chanting glory a'la Iron Maiden, whilst 'Call Of Frame' is again influenced by Helloween, pounding drums, thashy speedy guitars make for another victorious track, it may sound cliched at times, but it works, it goddamn works!! I know I know, your saying you've heard it all before, but we haven't heard it this good in ages, take the next track 'Heart Of The Rainbow', classic European metal, the kings metal!!

'The Quest' is a long epical song that starts with some lovely piano performed by Ferdy Doernberg from Rough Silk/Axel Rudi Pell and heartlfelt vocals Chris Bay, again proving to be more than capable of exploring many style with his distinctive voice. Anyway 'The Quest' is an anthemic epic a'la Helloween and Axel Rudi Pell and is loaded with great riffs, in a way the song also in parts reminds me of the song 'Master Of Puppets' from the Metallica album of the same name.

'Ocean' is an very atmospheric song, whilst 'Palace' toys around with stylish progressive work and is another great song. The last song 'The Wanderer' finishes on a joyous note making for an entertaing album that fans of Axel Rudi pell and Helloween should emjoy with majestic passion.

Rating: 8/10 (Review by Nicky Baldrian)

MAJESTIC 'TRINITY OVERTURE' (MASSACRE RECORDS)

Another progressive album that seems to be getting fans of the genre all worked up, for me though the highpoint has to be the stunning guitar work which simply soars to the point that you end up listening to some of the guitar work more than the song lyrics - anyway Majestic are a killer band with killer songs like 'Voodoo Treasure', the neo-classical riffs are a real teasure to listen to, the albums feel is of those guitar hero bands such as Hexanhaus, Fifth Angel, Apocrypha etc.. mixed with tons of Yngwie Malmsteen and Dream Theater influneces, this particular song is obviously inspired by Dream Theater and is most powerful indeed.

Another highly impressive song which bring to mind Yngwie Malmsteen circa 'Odyssey' is the excellent 'The Rapture Of Canaan', I love this song to death, especially the way the song is sung, perhaps song one of my favourite songs of 2000. I unfortuantley can't tell you who the line up of the band is, but they're very competent musicians with a very strong future ahead, check out songs like 'Curtain Of Fire' the stunning 'The Breath Of Horus' and 'Trinity Overture', now 'Trinity Overture' is huge, a strong neo-classical layerd song that you would have perhaps found Malmsteen, TNT or Cacophony perfoming in the late eighties with lots of Jason Becker and Marty Friedman influences.

Overall a very (excuse the pun) MAJESTIC album and a band to watch for certain.

Rating: 9/10 (Review by Nicky Baldrian)

STORMWIND 'RESSURECTION' (MASSACRE RECORDS)

I've only got as far as track two 'Ship Of Salvation' and already I'm biased. Track one 'Phoenix Rising' sounded quite dynamic and interesting, but once 'Ship Of Salvation' dropped it's anchours, a wave of iceberg melting riffs poured out of guitarist Thomas Wolf's wooded tool, you can't help but think that poor old 'Phoenix Rising' seems somewhat dwarfed by this titan of a song which reminds me so much of Yngwie Malmsteen, Thomas Vikstrom's vocals are are very much in the Joe Lynn Turner vein sometimes the vocals even get to such a high point that you'd swear that Rob Halford was guesting on this quite stupendous towering song. It's also hard to get into the next track 'Souldance' which feels a bit feeble after the majesticness of 'Ship Of Salvation'. 'Seven Seas' is beautifully performed, a serene piano led power ballad, I really loved the way Vikstrom sang this beautiful song, very effective indeed.

The next track 'Passion' is your average power metal grinder, whilst 'Blinded Eyes' builds nicely with complexed Friedman/Becker inspired guitar riffs.

Mr.Wolf then performs various angles of guitar textures on the inspirational 'Synphonia Millennialis' which is broken into three parts 'Nascentia', 'Resurrectio' and 'Renascentia', all of which will satisfy fans of Yngwie, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman, throughout this song Wolf stuns the listener with his amazing ideas which by the sound of it must have been pretty complexed to play.

Then it's back to song land with a bone crunching metal stomper called 'Samuraj' which leads into the last track 'Holy Land' a most impressive song, along with 'Ship Of Salvation' this song is another of the albums highlights. Stomwind are slowly making a name for themselves and play a satisfying blend of progressive rock, melodic rock and power metal. The band will shortly be in the studio to record a track for the fourthcoming JASON BECKER tribute cd which will hopefully raise their profile even higher. A great album.

ERIC JAMES ERSKINE 'NOVEMBER' (INDY)

Eric James Erskine is the new sensation from Moultonboro in the USA. Eric is a killer singer/songwriter in the Henry Lee Summer, Scott Sudbury, Paul Simon, John Cougar, Kenny Loggins, and Steve Perry vein, what you get is eight lightweight acoustic/piano led songs with thoughtful heartfelt lyrics, such as the excellent 'The Evil That Men Do' the soothing and dreamy harmonic led 'Drifting Away', the gorgeous Jonathan Caine, Mark Spiro, Kee Marcello-ish ballad 'The Ballad Of Martha Brown' and the opening song 'Walking In A Straight Line' all make for perfect late night listening. I did discover one classy song amongst the other gems called 'Feels Like Rain', this song is a relaxing soft pop/rock song with killer vocal harmonies similar to Richard Marx, Henry Lee Summer and Tim Feehan, here Eric's voice is really soft and very smooth.

'November' is a delightful album that I highly recommend you check out, excellently produced songs played by a great new artist. Watch out for an interview!!!

HAVEN 'HAVEN' (SIDE OF REALITY RECORDS)

A great band from the Thousand Oaks area in California, led by blonde bombshell Pamme Kirby. Haven's material offers a variation of skillfully crafted songs which range from good time melodic hard rockers like 'Hold On', 'Forgiveness','Strange Premonition' and 'Show Them', to delicate power ballads like 'Someday Soon', 'The Road', 'All I Ever Need' and 'Face The Day'.

At a guess, I'd say that Pamme is inspired by the likes of Heart, T'Pau, Private Life, MSG and Journey, and the influences show as the band have mustered up a number of guest artists including Jimmy Holtz from Fleetwood Mac, Steve Klong from 80's chart sensations Wilson Phillips and Richard Marx, former Guns 'N Roses drummer Matt Sorum and former MSG vocalist Robin McAuley, all of which add to the music's quality and makes the album sound fresh and exciting.

It was a suprise to see Robin McAuley on this album, McAuley features on two songs 'The Curtain' and 'Forgiveness', which will remind listeners of McAuley's days with MSG, particularly the 'Save Yourself' era mixed with a touch of Vixen - 'Forgiveness' is a brilliant melodic rocker with great melodies and killer chorus to singalong to, whilst 'The Curtain' is a stronger track with great lyrics in the Saraya, Pat Benatar vein, these two tracks along with 'Hold On' and 'Someday Soon' are my favourites, as a whole the album can at times can drag on a little, but as debut album go, for the most part this is a marvellous effort worth investigating.

HERBAL JUNKIE 'HERBAL JUNKIE' (INDY)

You would think that with a name like Herbal Junkie one could be forgiven for thinking that this New Jersey lot would be playing grunge metal, alas this is not the case, thankfully these guys play seventies based hard rock a'la Van Halen etc..

The album kicks off with a hefty hard rocker called 'Pieces On The Ground' which come across all Aerosmithithy and Van Halen-ish, guitarist James Douglas fires up some nice licks a'la Eddie Van Halen, and the whole vibe of the song is easy to get
into.

Next up is 'Dreams I've Had', this song moves into MSG and Ted Nugent classic rock territory and has a strong retro vibe. 'A Thing For You' is a much better commerical hard rock song in the vein of Van Halen, Telsa and Hair Of The Dog, whilst 'Story Of The Day' boasts a fine rythm section a'la 'Fair Warning' era Van Halen mixed with a little bit of funk a'la early Aerosmith and perhaps Love/Hate.

The album then clams down a little for the Rush/Police sounding accoustic 'Through My WIndow' which is ok but noithing to senastional.

Another cool and catchy song is the Dan Reed Network, Stevie Salas, Bulletboys influenced 'Pushing The World Away', check out the riffs from Douglas on this one, pretty cool song, 'Funk Machine' I found a bit to twee, and 'Psycho Magnet' is fun sleazy rock 'n roll. 'Big Top Woman' is a big funk rock number, the groove is big kinda like David Lee Roth's 'Elephant Gun' and is another of my fave tracks. The last song ' You And Me' ends the album on a balladic note. I like this album alot because of it's diversity, I do think however that a name change for the band is in order.

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCE 'WAR TO END ALL WARS'
(DREAM CATCHER)

Yngwie Johan Malmsteen was born on June 30th 1963, his family were very musically motivated and from the age of seven, Malmsteen became influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and by the time he was twelve Yngwie was already into taking classical guitar lessons. At fourteen Malmsteen discovers Deep Purple's 'Fireball' album and starts writing his own material and in 1983 he joins Steeler of which he recorded an album. Later that year he teamed up with Graham Bonnet in Alcatrazz and recorded two albums 'No Parole From Rock And Roll' and 'Live Sentence' before venturing out on his own with his debut self titled Rising Force album of which the vocals were handled by the then unknown Jeff Scott Soto. Next came 'Marching Out' followed swiftly the following year by the classic 'Trilogy' opus. This was the first album to mark the debut of singer Mark Boals.

Then came Yngwie's big break with the album 'Odyssey' with Joe Lynn Turner, this was the album that made the public aware of Malmsteen's capabilities, 'Odyssey' was a more streamlined album that sold well right across the globe.

'Eclipse' then followed with ex Madison singer Goran Edman on the mic, whilst his next release 'Fire And Ice' was a very classical and commerical sounding record, which was then followed by 'The Seventh Sign' which saw Mike Vescera joining the team, 'Magnum Opus', 'Inspirations', 'Facing The Animal' and 'Alchemy' followed with various videos and compilations cd's also being released over the years.

A dream was fulfilled in 1998 with perhaps Malmsteen's ultimate album 'Concerto Suite' which saw him really explore his classical influences with the backing of a full orchestra and is an album I still play to this day.

So Malmsteen seems to be on a bit of roll these days, expressing his musical abilities as far as they will stretch to a somewhat satisfying effect. His latest suite 'War To End All Wars' is a particularly engaging album featuring the wonderful vocal talents of Mark Boals. The only problem I can really find with 'War To End All Wars' is the production quality which really spoils the albums feel and makes some of the songs sound of demo quality, given Yngwie's pedigree in the rock field, one would have thought he would have polished this album up and taken care of things - add to the fact that this is an important album for Malmsteen as Spitfire Records are giving this album a full US release, one wonders why the label would let an album of this standard out, so be warned, even so 'W.T.E.A.W' features the usual technically complexed structures blended in with symphonic neo-classical passages taken right out of Beethoven and Mozart's book, such as on the first song 'Prophet Of Doom' which is a mindblowing neo-classical shred fest, but it's not just about how fast Malmsteen shreds, the song and it's lyrical content compliment Malmsteen's expert wizardry.

The next song goes back to the style heard on 'Fire And Ice', 'Crucify' epically pounds along in typical Malmsteen style, Yngwie makes use of the sitar throughout this song whilst Boals really puts in some heavy performances, the whole song sounds really massive and interesting and is destined to become one of Yngwie's many classic songs in years to come.

'Catch 22' opens up with insane thrashy drum pounding from John Macaluso, 'Catch 22' is a heavier sounding track that shows bands like Rhapsody etc how it's really done.

Another strong and effective number is the quite glorious 'Bad Reputation', Boals' soaring vocals are remisant of Joe Lynn Turner, this song grows into a killer hard rock song that is easy to singalong to and also features classical interpretations.

'Masquerade' like 'Bad Reputation' leans towards a more commercial style, the whole song is brilliant with the whole band firing on all cylinders, 'Masquerade' is another of my favourite tracks.

'Molto Arpeggiosa' is next and as you have guessed this is an impressive instrumental, this is one of those songs that makes you realise why Yngwie has been a major innovator on so many players, his use of classical elements against the context of the rock book is pretty admirable, and his playing on this song is quite exciting. A beautiful ballad called 'Miracle Of Life' soars with passionate vocals from Boals and is a profoundly touching experience with it's heartfelt melodies, also impressive is 'The Wizard', a typical Malmsteen stomper highlighted by the aggressive guitar tone, whilst the slightly calmer 'Tarot' is another perfectly attractive song, as is the title track and 'Black Sheep Of The Family' which experiments with funky regge parts etc a'la Bob Marley and Sting!!!

Malmsteen may suffer from an egotastic reputation, but when you turn out instrumental parts like 'Instrumental Institution' and 'Preludium' that greet listeners with violins and orchestral like passages and fast arpeggio sections that break into a hard hitting progressive compositions called 'Wild One', you realise that Yngwie pilots a unique quality that is untouchable, Yngwie deserves more recognition than what he gets, because of his diversity he is perhaps an easy target for the press to attack as his music is tough to write about, with the only flaw here being the aforemention production sound, had the care been taken, then this reocrd would have been an utter masterpiece, which is such a pitty and a major let down, I think it's time Yngwie bought in an outside producer, his guitar playing as always is fantastic, but he's not a very good engineer and producer, regardless of what critics may say Malmsteen will continue as always to pour out the music he himself loves, you can't argue at that, let's prey that Yngwie will learn from these mistakes and lets hope that his next album will rise his ever ensuing popularity even higher. Roll on the tour!!

OBEDIENT SON '4 TRACK DEMO' (INDY)

Christian melodic rock band formed in 1994 in Minnessotta. This band sound like a mixture of Stryper crossed with L.A Guns and many other eighties US acts.

The band sent me this four track cdr demo, which only really has one good song to talk about called ''Take It To The Cross' which is pretty good, the chorus is easy to get into and to singalong with and reminds me of Stryper, Megadeth and Ted Nugent amongst others. 'Like A Thief In The Night' is also fun rock 'n roll but is spoilt by the annoying gritty vocals. 'Don't Go That Way' is just average mhr, whilst the last song 'A New Life' tries it's best to please, but once again the vocals are far to annoying. A change in vocalsist is needed with this band, topped with a better sound quality then Obedient Son could be worth talking about.

BIG BANG 'MANIC' (CRYSTAL AUDIO)

Oh god another boring band who come from the US. These guys play acoustic driven pop rock, some of the songs are catchy but for the most part Big Bang sound too safe for their own good, more electric guitars wouldn't go a miss next time guys. To their credit they have a killer frontman in Greg Pedde who sounds like a slightly calmer Danny Bowes from British rockers Thunder, Greg has a British tone to his voice and the feeling I get is as if he wants to really let his vocals go ansd singer in higher rock style tempo, particualrly on songs like 'Broken', but as I mentioned these guys seriously need to ro ck things up if they intend to make any sort of imapct outside of the REM world of pop/rock The potential is theire though.

ANNIE O'MOSS 'SIX PACK' (INDY)

The Annie O'Moss band are from Texas and are led by the killer vocal talents of Debra Ann Fiedler. The band got their name from thew word ANONYMOUS. Anyway this band play catchy pop rock that has a very seventies retor feel, all the songs are very catchy with my favourites being 'Longest Journey', 'Tell Me You Are Listening', and 'Pain', all of which lie somewhere between early Heart and Janis Joplin and makes for a very entertaining set of recordings.

VARIOUS 'WARNING: MINDS OF RAGING EMPIRES - A TRIBUTE TO QUEENSRYCHE' (ADRENALIN/FRONTIERS RECORDS)

Curious beasts tribute albums, and beasts that seem to serve only to make the listeners return, with few exceptions, to the subject of the tribute, and one wonders if they are nothing more than a method of writing off tax, with the faint hope of making a bit of money.

Thus, how does a band approach a Queensyche song, note for note or adding their own twist? The former is the safe option, happily pursued by most bands on this album, for example, Forte delivering a faithful version of 'Prophecy', and Mayadome offering a respectful run through of 'Neue Regel'.

So, what's to pique the interest, well, Moon of Steel has a female vocalist who produces a haunting vocal on 'Anybody Listening?', and suggest that they may be worth checking out; Black Symphony inject the venom on a storming 'Deliverance'and stand out because their vocalist is Tom Keifer gone metal; and Swan Christy gives us a poignant 'Someone Else'.

The value of these albums is up for debate, but the positive aspect of this particular example is that I now want to investigate the likes of Moon of Steel, and Swan Christy.

SYRENS CALL 'FANASEA' (BRENNUS RECORDS)

Brennus is a French label that has been helping develop it's domestic scene into the relatively healthy state it is today- healthy you cry? Well, Angra sold 20,000 copies of their 'Fireworks' album there, and Syrens Call are one of the home grown bands on the label.

Syrens Call operate in the very crowded progressive metal market, but are blessed with an adroit lead guitarist in Thibaut Coisne, and a distinctive vocalist in Valerie Paul who crosses Doro with a touch of the singer from Pleasure Bombs, whose name escapes my grey matter at the moment, and thus suggest a certain talent and ability to go further, and in the nicely balanced 'Bravehearts' they have a song that combines melody, technique with a few nod and winks at acts such as Vanden Plas, and 'Heresy(The trial of Galileo)' is lyrically brave, and driven by a strong guitar line, though Valerie seems a trifle unsure at times. A cover of Kiss' 'I still love you' is included and it's string based arrangement works well, but it is not a song that suits the type of voice Valerie Paul has.

Given time though, and the right investment, there could a strong album in Syrens Call. Watch this space.

EMPYRIA 'THE LEGACY' (NIGHTMARE RECORDS)

Following on from 1996's 'Behind Closed Doors' & 1999's 'Changing Current', 'The Legacy' sees Empyria release the fourth 4th chapter of 'The Lighter side of darkness', which takes it's place alongside the first three for the first time.

The aforementioned 'The Lighter side..'draws on classic 2112 era Rush, Dream Theater circa 'Awake with nods and winks at fusion to convey mood and dislocation, with guitarist Mike Kischnick's playing, whilst indulging in all appropriate crunch, goes beyond the usual suspects into a certain lightness of touch and economy which suggests a block of Pat Metheney cd's in his collection-this is a factor especially evident on 'The Grand Illusion'.

Vocalist Phil Leite comes across as a classically trained Ozzy, with a King Diamond-esque falsetto, and an Axl Rose nasal edge, the latter quality coming to thefore on the acoustic 'Years behind'.

A cover of The Police's 'Synchroncity II' ( a horrible song by an overrated band) we could do without, another Empyria original being a much better proposition, but there's enough promise and talent on display here to suggest a band that could carve out a rewarding niche for themselves.
