Keith was alone in the dinghy. Thomas sat on the edge of the lake and watched him with a frown on his face. He was in a dilemma. He knew Keith would definitely be punished if his mother found out that he had been rowing the boat alone again. Keith was so intent on rowing to the bank that he did not see Thomas. He caught a glimpse of his cousin only when he almost reached the bank. Keith half stood in the boat and waved at Thomas.
Keith's sudden movement unbalanced the boat. He lost his footing and fell into the icy water. Thomas hastily jumped into the lake and swam towards him. He knew the latter was not a good swimmer and felt a sense of desperation as he searched for Keith. The surface of the water was covered with weed and Thomas could scarcely see below it. He groped around frantically. Seconds passed and Thomas started to panic.
Suddenly, he caught a leg that was kicking wildly in the water. Concerned that Keith might drag both of them to the bottom of the lake, Thomas shouted at the top of his voice for Keith to remain calm. With great effort, Thomas eventually pulled Keith safely to the bank. They were both shivering when they collapsed on the ground. Keith started to cough violently. He looked pale and dazed. Thomas knew it was crucial that they keep themselves warm.
He saw some smoke a short distance away and beckoned to Keith to follow him. The two boys were glad when they saw a brick house with a chimney.
