Abstract

Blakeburn Elementary School, a new K-5 school in a rapidly growing suburb of Vancouver, implemented new performance standards for social responsibility as part of a focus on creating community. Initial planning identified social responsibility as a key goal for the school. The performance standards played a key role in working towards and monitoring school improvement in this area. The principal and staff incorporated the social responsibility standards into all aspects of the school, including whole school activities, classroom learning, parent interactions, and staff development. Initial data from interviews, observations, surveys, and evaluation of student growth indicate a high degree of awareness and understanding of social responsibility and the standards among students, parents, and staff, and a perception, shared by students and parents that the school overall meets or exceeds the expectations outlined in the standards. Evaluations of individual students, using the performance standards in October and April, indicate substantial overall improvement, male students (who began with lower scores), showing relatively stronger growth than their female counterparts. Key factors in the successful implementation of the standards are described, along with implications of the results and suggestions for further research.
