Artist Statement

My body of work consists of three types of art: photography, ceramics, and acrylic paintings.  Each piece I create in one medium has characteristics found in the others.  To keep my work balanced, I approach photography formally, painting expressively, and ceramics with a mixture of both.  Each type of art I create compliments the others through imagery, line, form, color, and texture.  My experiences are
reflected through my art using different treatments of technique and artistic expression.

Photography has made it possible for me to
capture images that allow the viewer to experience different places.  My photographic body of work observes the many effects captured in the reflective surfaces of classic automobiles.  As one looks into the reflective surfaces, images are distorted and abstracted which changes the perception of reality.  I make the photographs formal or structured by finding relationships between the visual elements of design.

Ceramics allows me to stay somewhat formal, yet focus on the expressive side of art.  The ceramic sculptures I
create are very personal and document my good and bad experiences through life.  They are reflections of moments of great joy and tough learning experiences.
My paintings are almost exclusively
expressive.  They relate to my photography by use of saturated hues and abstracted shapes.  Their relationship to my ceramics is the imagery and concepts found in the paintings.

As we go through life we have many experiences.  The experiences we have allow us to reflect and prepare ourselves for future events.  How we reflect and react to these experiences determines the characteristics of our personalities.  Through my artwork, whether it is a photograph, ceramic sculpture, or painting, I am able to reflect upon my experiences and share them with the viewer.  The evocations produced by my work allow the viewer to have an
experience through my artistic vision.
