To make a butterfly quilt using hankies.

A fun quilt to make uses old hankies. Perhaps your grandmother left you some.
I have just started one and am still in the early stages...but for those who wish to do your own...here are two pictures to show how to fold the hankies. As you will see it is a lot like making an origami butterfly. The best hankies to use are those that are colorful and have large floral motifs. A border is also good.

The picture on the left shows the way the hankie will be folded and the picture on the right shows how to fold it.
Take the hankie, fold it in half, and then tuck under the "dark" sections so that it looks
like the wings are tucked under the body of the butterfly.

After you have folded the hankies, place them on a square and applique them down. I use the blanket stitch in a contrasting color (using embroidery floss.) Then you will want to stitch in the "antennae" also using embroidery floss. The antennae will reach up into the "blank side" of the square.

I hope to have a picture of my finished quilt here eventually, don't hold your breath. Once I get a few squares completed I will put pictures of them here also.

Here is an example of a quilt top created by Pauline G.
It was a prize winner at her local country fair in 2003.
