|||||||||||||||||
The Study Abroad at CIRMA academic program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who seek a profound immersion in Central American society, culture, history and politics. This in-depth, multidisciplinary program combines coursework and real-world experience to provide a unique, bottom-up perspective on Guatemala's and Central America's contemporary problems and rich heritage. Located in one of the region's leading social science research institutes, the Study Abroad program engages the most compelling topics of academic study in an immediate and transformational way. The 6-week intensive Summer program and the full-length Fall and Spring semesters are tailored to provide students with a sophisticated understanding of how the region came to be what it is today. Courses of study include Central American and Guatemalan history, Mayan archaeology, anthropology, Spanish language and literature, and Mayan languages, with cross-disciplinary focuses in culture, politics, geography and ethnography. Complementing classes and Guatemalan homestays are lectures, field trips, internships and graduate advising services. Students also have priviledged access to CIRMA's unique documentary and photographic collections. And of course, program participants also have weekends to explore the country on their own! New Field Trip - LAS 499: Historical Origins of the Armed Conflict in Quiche: we have added a one-week, two-credit travel course on human rights and post-conflict issues and the end of the academic session. The week-long course will be open to family members and others and will feature visits to communities of former combatants and sites that were the focus of both violence and reconciliation. Tuition for this short course is separate from the regular tuition. |
