Stumps Don't Lie is a sculpture project I created while at Connecticut College.  There are two lineages in my work, one I call the Furtives, the other are the stump covers.  I chose the name for my project from the bumper stickers I saw in Oregon.  The stickers referred to the huge stika spruce and redwoods that were being harvested for picnic tables and fences.  The Sculptures are really graffitti on the landscape, they exist for those who happen upon them.

The Furtives are hidden in plain view, their form is intended to mimic a particular characteristic of their surroundings.  They are large steel structures, up to 12 feet tall, but are often passed by without being noticed.  Click on the titles below to see photos of the sculpture.

The Stump Covers represent a final clamping down, encasing the remains of a 100 or 200 year old being.  The forged steel construction follows the shape of the stump underneath, creating a sarcophagus or death mask.  Click on the titles below to see photos of the sculpture.
