Goals: Students will learn "wish clause" Objectives: Students will be able to make sentences with "wish" I greet and warm up. PRE-TEACHING I want to read a story about ERIC MORRISEY and his experience.I want students to listen carefully and understand the meaning. Lead In Activity "when ı was younger, I used to play the guitar in a group called Runnig Heads.I was really arrongant in those days.I always thought I knew better than everyone else. And I was always quarrelling with the others in the band.In the end, things got so bad that I decided toleave. When I left,Running Heads got a new guitarist.Soon after that, they made a record and it became quite a big hit.Today, they are a very popular band.Looking back,I have to say I wish I hadn't left Running Heads when I did.It was a big mistake. My biggest dream has always been to be a professional musician. And, of course, if I'd stayed with Running Heads, that dream would have come true.I wish I'd been less arrogant at the time. Then, perhaps, I wouldn't have left the band." GOALS:Students will learn "wish" form OBJECTIVES:Students will be able to use "wish" in daily speech. I greet and warm up. PRE-TEACHING My aim is to teach "wish" by the help of a story. LEAD-IN ACTIVITY When I was 18, I was offered the opportunity to go to the United States and train to be a professional tennis player.Tennis has always been one of my greatest loves, but, at the time, I decided that I didn't want to leave my family and friends to go and live in a strange country.Whenever I think about it now , I really wish I hadn't turned that opportunity down.I wish I 'd realized just what a fantastic chance it was for me.Looking back , I realize I didn't really have very much confidence in myself in those days.If I'd been more self confident , I would probably have accepted the offer. What would have hapened if I'd gone to the United States? It is something I will always wonder about. At least if I'd gone ,I'd have found out if I was good enough to become a tennis pro.But now I suppose I will never really know. Goals:Students will learn "used to" and "would" Objectives:Students will be able to recognize the meaning and differences of "used to" and "would" Students will be able to make sentences with "used to" and "would" I greet and warm up. PRE-TEACHING I show students a picture of Mick Malone and read a passage about what he says.I want students to listen carefully the memories of him. Lead In Activity When I was a child, I used to go to a boys' boarding school near Cork in the south of Ireland. This photo was taken on my first day there. As you can see in the photograph, we used to have to wear a really stupid-looking school uniform. It was the one thing I really used to hate about school. They did not even use to let us take off the uniform at weekends, when we were free to go into the next village. The village children would laugh and tease us about our clothes.I used to get really angry with them and I would get into terrible fights.I still hate uniforms even now after all these years.Perhaps that's the reason I became a private eye and not a police detective. LEADING ACTIVITIES Since leading activities help students motivate to the lesson ,they are very important.By using leading activity , students not only concentrate the lesson but also learn it subconsiously.Morever, each lessons become more interesting for them.In this study ,I will represent two kinds of leading activities which are singing song ,and playing game. ACTIVITY 1 In this activity I want to reinfore students' ability to use the numbers properly. This activity is suitable espesially in the beginner level. It takes about 10 minutes. Before the lesson , I will drow a puzzle on the board then I will bring handouts that contain same puzzle. After greeting ,since students are expected to have learned the numbers in previous lessonI offer them playing a game.I explain that in the puzzle there are some numbers that I want them to find. They look at it a few seconds , then I will do an example for them. After finding the numbers students will show it on the board and write it. I think by this way students enjoy the lesson and while playing a game they recover their knowledge about the lesson. LEAD-IN ACTIVITIES READING A POEM IF I HAD CHILD TO RAISE OVER AGAIN If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d finger- paint more, and point the fingers less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I would care to know less and know to care more. I'd take more hikes and fly more kites. I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I'd do more hugging and less tugging. I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later. I would be firm less often, and affirm much more. I'd teach less about the love of power, And more about the power of love. by Diane Loomans TELLING A JOKE Have a laugh 'If you were my husband I'd poison your coffee. ' Lady Astor told Sir Winston Churchill during the many rows they had. 'If you were my wife, I'd drink it.' he told her. The poem and joke are used in case the students would have an idea about the usage of Type 2 conditional. Also, these activities prepare them what topic will be covered. QUICK WORK Ted Robinson has been worried all the week. Last Tuesday he received a letter from the local police. In the letter he was asked to call at the station. Ted wandered why he was wanted by the police, but he went to the station yesterday and now he's not worried any more. At the station he was told by a smiling policeman that his bicycle had been found. Five days ago, the policeman told him, the bicycle was picked up in a small village four hundred miles away. It's now being sent to his home by train. Ted was most surprised when he heard the news. He was amused too, because he never expected the bicycle to be found. It was stolen twenty years ago when Ted was a boy of fifteen! My aim is to start teaching The Passive Voice with that funny story. A GLASS ENVELOPE My daughter, Jane, never dreamed of receiving a letter from a girl of her own age in Holland. Last year, we were travelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into the bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She never thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. However, they have decided to use the post-office. Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly travel faster. The use of Conjunctions will be taught to the students with that story. Submitted by Buket Kapan 3-C/ELT |
A CLEAR CONSCIENCE The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost. Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post-office. Sam was sure that the wallet must have been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his front door. It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said : 'A thief, yes, but only 50 per cent a thief!' Two months later, some more money was sent to Sam with another note : 'Only 25 per cent a thief now!' In time, all Sam's money was paid back in this way. The last note said : 'I'm 100 per cent honest now!' I aim to teach The Passive Voice with that enjoyable story. SOLD OUT 'The play may begin at any moment.' I said. 'It may have begun already.' Susan answered. I hurried to the ticket-office. 'May I have two tickets please?' I asked. 'I am sorry, we've sold out.' the girl said. 'What a pity!' Susan exclaimed. Just then, a man hurried to the ticket-office. 'Can I return these two tickets?' he asked. 'Certainly!' the girl said. I went back to the ticket-office at once. 'Could I have those two tickets please?' I asked. 'Certainly!' the girl said, 'but they are for next Wednesday's performance. Do you still want them?' 'I might as well have them.' I said sadly. The Reported Speech is the subject that I want to teach with that story. _ Submitted by Filiz Gökce 3-C/ELT |
DID YOU WANT TO TELL ME SOMETHING? My dentist had just pulled out one of my teeth and had told me to rest for a while.I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton-wool. He knew I collected birds' eggs and asked me whether my collection was growing. He then asked me how my brother was, and whether I liked my new job in London. In answer to these questions I either nodded of made strange noises. Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching out the hole where my tooth had been. I suddenly felt very worried, but could not say anyting. When the dentist at last removed the cotton-wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth. My aim is to teach the Reported Speech in affirmative sentences and in questions. ONE MAN IN A BOAT Fishing is my favourite sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am even less lucky. I never catch anything- not even old boots. After having spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. 'You must give up fishing!' my friends say. 'It's a waste of time.' But they don't realize one important thing. I'm not really interested in fishing. I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing not at all! My aim is to teach adjectives with that story. Submitted by Hasibe Dönmez 3-C/ELT |
