FISHING TRIPS 2001 pg 2 |
SEPTEMBER Tim, Craig and I made a trip back up to Lake St. Clair in early September that could best be described as the 'Exploration' trip. We filled up the 38-gallon tank in the Starcraft Citori 180 and hit some deep-water spots at the mouth of the Bassett and the shipping channel near the Firecracker buoy. We even made a trip to the southern end of the lake to the Belle River Hump. We put a bunch of miles on the Optimax 150 and saw some new water. Our only good fish, including a few 4 pounders, were caught on the St Luke's drop and at the Weed Stake area. Craig did manage to catch a jumbo perch and a nice walleye on a spoon. |
OCTOBER Craig, Tim, Dan, John "Pip" Habil and myself made a mid -October trip to Lake St. Clair. Friday afternoon and all day Saturday found the porky fall smallies on a serious feed. The fish were bunched up in small areas in the 10-11ft spots. Most of the fish we boated were in the 3.5-5 lb range! The remainder of the week was mostly a blow-off. Rain and super high winds whipped-up the lake into a chocolate milkshake. We passed the time by fishing for bluegills and crappies in the boathouse. But, all in all, we did manage four 5 pounders for the week. I was able to record my biggest smallie yet that weighed in at 5 lbs. 7 ozs. |

2001 SUMMARY Fishing year 2001 can best be described as the year of FIRSTS. Here are some of the fishing FIRSTS for the year: · Tim fished Lake Ouachita and Lake of the Woods for the FIRST time. He also fished with Craig in his FIRST bass tourney on Lake Barkley. · It was the FIRST time someone went up to LSC in early May. · Tim and I had a Musky FIRST when we hooked 3 (boated 1 ¾) on 6lb and 8lb test line in one day. · It was the FIRST time we found good fishing in August when we went 'HUMPING' at the Belle River Hump on Lake St. Clair. · We got PIP out in the Starcraft for the FIRST time when he substituted his week in Texas for the fall Lake St. Clair trip. · The Lake Erie Kelley's Island trip was the FIRST time we really found and fished all the good reefs around the Island. We got a bunch of good GPS spots. · It was 5lb FIRSTS for smallmouth for both Dan and myself. I managed to get 4 over 5lbs this year. * It also was Tim's FIRST full year of retirement, giving him plenty of opprotunities to go fishing. We spent a lot of time on the water this year and got some good quality fish. We found some new spots and set several personal records. We are already looking forward to 2002. |
