LUTHER
All I could see was his forehead, rack and shoulders through my site. This stare-down went on for what seemed like 5 minutes but was most likely only a few. I moved the crosshairs to behind his shoulder and figured my only chance was to take the shot when he turns to run off. When he turned to his left I shot and the bolt went in behind his right shoulder. He ran off about 60 yards and went out of sight.

I waited about 10 minutes and climbed down and went back to camp to get help. It was getting dark and I did not want to take the chance of kicking him up in the dark. We waited until about 8:00 and went looking for him. We found him not far from the place where I had last seen him. He is a 9-point typical and scored 122 1/8 BTR, and scored   135 4/8  Buckeye Big Buck points  My first crossbow buck!
On the afternoon of November 5, 1999 I hunted from the ‘Golden Pine’ on private land in Hocking Co. Ohio. Around 5:15 I stood up to put my jacket on. As soon as I sat down I looked left and then right. I couldn’t believe it, there was a deer walking down the quad path heading right for me! It was closing fast! It turned its head when it was about 30 yards from me and I could see it was a good buck with the longest tines about 9-10 inches. It walked down the quad path and stopped broadside about 10-12 yards to my right. A perfect shot opportunity. I put the crosshairs of my crossbow on him and pulled the trigger, BUT IT DIDN’T FIRE!!!
I quickly figured out that the bolt had slipped out from the holder while I was putting my jacket on. I nudged the bolt back into place and when I moved my   right hand back to the trigger my arm brushed up against the bark of the tree. When I looked through the site I saw that the buck was looking me right in the eye! He was only about 8 yards from the tree and facing slightly toward me.  There was no way I could take the shot!
