Film Review: ''Yen Swaasa Kaatrae''

1 / 4 STARS

DIRECTOR: K.S. RAVI

ACTORS: ARAVIND SWAMY, PRAKASH RAJ

ACTRESS: ISHA GOPIKAR

MUSIC DIRECTOR: A.R. RAHMAN

STORYLINE:

Arun (Aravind Swamy) is a safecracker, not by choice, but because he is blackmailed by his brother (Prakash Raj). He must remain a crook to save their father (Raguvaran) from his brother's clutches. This to one side, Arun falls in love with Madhu (newcomer Isha Gopikar whose second movie "Kadhal Kavithai" was released first), and she falls in love with him as well. It is then that Madhu discovers Arun's profession and she hates him. The movie is resolved in, what else?, a shootout.

COMMENTS:

Kadikkuranungalae!

Aravind, O Aravind, you were so good in "Thalapathy" and "Roja". What HAPPENED?

Isha, O Isha, you were so good in "Kadhal Kavithai". What HAPPENED?

Prakash, O Prakash, you were so good in "Guru Paarvai". What HAPPENED?

Raguvara, O Raguvara, you were so good in countless movies. What HAPPENED?

The only redeeming quality of this movie is the music. The story is outlandish, the execution terrible, and the acting second-rate. This was the movie that was supposed to propel Aravind Swamy back into superstardom?! Ayoh kadavule!

NOTE ON THE MUSIC:

The first of A.R. Rahman's musical hits for the year. The songs are very well-written. "Jumbalakka" with Japan Kumar is very amusing. Though this movie had such a good score, it did not receive a Subash Awards nomination for this achievement would be overshadowed by later greater achievements by the maestro.

RECOMMENDATION:

The first real "skip it" movie of the year.
