STORYLINE:
Every year the Subash Awards picks one movie as the Worst Movie of the Year. The movie
for 1999 has been picked. That movie is Mugam. Anybody who can sit through the whole
thing deserves some kind of reward. I'm not joking, Nasser plays an ugly man whose
life is ruined because of his ugliness. One day, going through his make-up man
friend's (Manivannan's) bag, he comes upon a make-up mask that when he wears it, makes
him handsome --
-- so handsome that he builds up a followinng of people who love his face,
-- so handsome riots stop as soon as he shoows his face,
-- so handsome that Roja marries him immediiately.
In the end, Nasser must decide whether to keep the fake face or use his real one.
COMMENTS:
My father thinks this story would have made a good book. It has a point to make after
all. But the movie was horrid. Number one -- Nasser's not handsome enough for this
role. Number two -- NO ONE is handsome enough for this role. Number three -- most
shots are over four minutes long EACH, making this a laborious and dull affair. The
storyline moves at a snail's pace.
A fellow review site, www.lolluexpress.com, said he was mesmerized by Nasser's
amazing acting abilities. Sorry, Nasser, I didn't see anything like that. Roja and
Vivek as well are just there, and Manivannan's character is also dull and
uninvolving.
I also don't see any connection between being ugly and being in the army.
This movie has the honor of having absolutely no redeeming qualities.
NOTE ON THE MUSIC:
Nothing stood out.
RECOMMENDATION:
If you value yourself at all, SKIP THIS MOVIE. Please.
