Film Review: ''James Pandu''

2 / 4 STARS

DIRECTOR: SELVA

ACTORS: PARTHIPAN, PRABHU DEVA

ACTRESSES: KOUSALYA, RENU

MUSIC DIRECTOR: -- unknown --

STORYLINE:

R. Parthipan and Prabhu Deva play James and Pandu, two porters who hate each other. They are loved respectively by mute Kousalya and Renu. Nilalgal Ravi makes Prabhu Deva a deal -- steal a suitcase from him and give it back to him later, and he will give him money. The suitcase is actually full of money, and it's an insurance scam, and Prabhu Deva, for want of money, agrees to it. Thalaivaasal Vijay, Ravi's second-in-command, then strikes a deal with Parthipan -- steal the suitcase from Prabhu Deva, and he will give Parthipan money. So Parthipan and Prabhu Deva do this but in the process the suitcase drops open and when they see it's full of money, the two porters steal the money. But it is later revealed that Nilalgal Ravi was murdered, and the blame falls on the two unlucky porters.

The story goes downhill from there, and the interest first created in the murder mystery is lost completely after that. Their travails take the two porters to the homes of many people who are possibly the murder and the surprise ending (with Kousalya carrying a knife and a chit fund side story) is not very interesting.

But for the last forty-five minutes of the 1st half, this is a wonderfully hilarious movie!

COMMENTS:

Maybe I'm being soft on this movie because I'm a Parthipan fan, but for the forty-five minutes before the interval, this movie seems beautifully hilarious, with a plot full of elaborate double-crosses and lots of fun one-liners! And when Thalaivaasal Vijay ties Prabhu Deva up in that way, who can help but laugh?

But, of course, the first fifteen minutes of the movie are extremely boring, and so is the second half. The murder mystery is badly done, and the resolution kind of dully stupid.

But I'd watch it for those forty-five minutes over and over again.

NOTE ON THE MUSIC:

Pretty bad.

RECOMMENDATION:

If you're a Parthipan fan like me, watch the video for lots of fun comedy.
