2 / 4 STARS
DIRECTOR: S.J. SURYA
ACTOR: VIJAY
ACTRESS: JOTHIKA
MUSIC DIRECTOR: DEVA
STORYLINE:
Vijay is a college student -- Jothika is a college student, and from birth, the
director tells us they're somehow fated to fall in love. The screenplay goes on to
tell us how.
It seems Shiva (Vijay) and Jenny (Jothika) love each other from the very beginning,
but their egos forbid them from admitting it. So they fight and fight and fight and
fight. Then in the end, they let go of their egos, profess their love, and marry
(don't worry, I didn't ruin the ending, S.J. Surya does that from the very start!).
There's not much more to the story than that.
COMMENTS:
My cousins in India, all Vijay fans, loved this movie. I thought it was okay. One
scene is extremely extremely funny with Vijayakumar and his "adam pidicha kaluthai."
Otherwise, the comedy is mediocre.
Mumtaj and Shilpa Shetty appear mainly for songs and glamor purposes.
Vijay acts well, but Jothika overacts so much that I am almost ready to refuse to
watch anymore of her movies. And the ending of the movie is so drawn-out I yawned
every twenty seconds (like when they phone each other and it's busy all the time).
The screenplay, just like "Vaali", is very raunchy and sexually suggestive. And this
movie even features probably the longest on-screen kiss in a mainstream Tamil movie
outside of a Kamal Haasan film.
NOTE ON THE MUSIC:
Big hit in India. Pretty good by my standards. "Macerina" is a lot of fun, "Yaar
Solvathoe" and "Megam Karukkuthu" are pretty good, but the worst song of the bunch is
"Kattipudi Kattipudida." Next time, Surya, don't sink so low.
RECOMMENDATION:
Vijay fans, this one's a theater movie for you. For the rest of us, video will do
just fine.
