HOME SWEET HOME

Its new, its different and it flows freely. That's about the best description of Indian Ocean's offering Kandisa. The title song Kandisa (praise) is inspired by a Syrian Catholic Hymn believed to be over a thousand years old. The song is sung in Aramic, a sacred language used even by Jesus. And this wonderful piece is complemented by six other tracks, each of them riveting and engaging.

The themes of the numbers are varied. The album opens with a song reflecting on the inexplicability of war by us humans, while it might just be another day in the life of Lord Shiva. This is followed by a traditional hymn from Nimad in Madhya Pradesh about the Narmada river. "Leaving home" dwells on the pastoral myth revisited and the futility of trying to return to a golden past. Hile re is based on a powerful poem by the revolutionary Bihari poet Gorakh Pande urging people to shake the world free of its ills. And then there's what is possibly the best piece in this collection - Khajuraho described aptly by the band as a musical celebration of life, sensuality, procreation, recreation and exuberance flowing into eternity. Peace and brotherhood as a way of life is the theme of Kaun.

The album is principally about free flowing music, than anything else.  Susmit Sen on the acoustic guitar in particular deserves special mention for producing excellent music. This album produces inspired music from the soul. You don't have to understand the lyrics to enjoy the album. The music will endear itself to you, surprising you with the apparently unconventional but inherently flowing music. The album has been released by Times Music and is available  both as audio tape and CD.
