Going Beyond the Basic Web Page
Creating a “Web”
of Pages
As your build your site, you will be connecting many
individual pages together. This is how you link other pages to your index or
original page.
- On
your index page, make a text box and list the class(es) you teach.
- Save
your page
- Open a
new web page
- Create
a text box at the top of the page and type the name of one of your classes.
Underneath, list links you wish to provide for your students, such as
“syllabus,” “expectations,” “assignments,” “references,” etc.
- Save
the page and name it after the class
- Click
on the “open” icon and open your index page once again.
- Highlight
the course title that you just made a page for
- Click
on the “Link” icon and select “My Page”
- Click
on the “Choose” button and select the class page
- Now
your index page is linked to your class page
- Save
your index page and view it – click on the link you just made to ensure
that it works.
- Before
you close the internet explorer preview, copy the web URL of the class
page. You will need this for the next step
Saving Word
Documents to Your Web Page
To save yourself from having to retype syllabi, handouts,
expectations, etc. that you wish to post on your webpage, you may simply link a
word document already on your hard drive.
- Open
the word document you wish to link
- At the
top of the document, type “Back to previous page”
- Highlight
this and then click “insert” and then “hyperlink”
- Copy
and paste the web URL of the class web page in the dialogue box and high
“OK”
- Go to
“File” then “Save as a web page” (make sure the file name is simple and
has no punctuation or spaces)
- Now
you must download this document onto your web page
- In Geocities,
go to “File” and then “Upload Files and Images”
- Click
“Browse” and locate and select your word document from your hard drive
- Click
“upload”
- Highlight
the text on your web page you want to link the word document to
- Click
“Link”
- Choose
“My File” from the drop down box and then hit “Choose”
- Select
the word document and click “OK”
- Your
web page is now connected to your word document
- Save
your page and view it. Click on the link to test it.
