Julius Caesar Journal Entries
(to be complete in Windows Journal)

Act I: Do you think positive political change can ever be brought about through violence? Through tyranny? If so, under what circumstances? Give reasons for your answers. What evidence toward either argument does Shakespeare provide in Act I?

Act II: Analyze Brutus' speech on pages 61-63, lines 175-196 ("Our course will seem too bloody [...]"). Break down what it is that he is saying. Then discuss whether you agree or disagree with him. Do you think what Brutus is saying is possible, or is he trying to make himself feel better about the murder he is going to commit?

Act III: Analyze Brutus' speech to the public about his reasons for murdering Caesar on page 117, lines 13-36 and then answer the following questions: 1) What is the overall tone of this speech?  2) How would you describe the style of this speech?  3) Does Brutus accomplish his reason for delivering this speech?  4) What mistake does Brutus make in speaking first?

Act IV: Go to Suelly's Assignments & References page. Under "References" click on the link entitled "What if Brutus...?" Follow the directions and record your answers in Windows Journal.

Act V: After reading the handout on Stoicism, discuss any examples of stoicism you recognize in Julius Caesar, specifically in Act V.
