1) How many years have your raised Newfoundlands? 24 years
2) Do you raise any other breeds other than Newfoundlands? No
3) How many litters of newfy pups do you raise per year? At least 1 litter per year. Our last time we had 2 litters was in 2004.
4) How many Newfoundlands do you own? 7
5) Can I come and see your facilities? Yes, if there is a scheduled appointment
6) Can I send a deposit towards a future puppy? Only if your home has been
approved and a litter is expected soon. It is important for your to fill out a NEWFY APPLICATION and email it to me.
7) When can I come and see the puppies? The puppies need at least their first series of shots at six weeks to help provide immunity against viruses. Viruses such as Parvo can be brought on the clothing and feet of individuals that have been exposed to infected feces of an affected dog with Parvo or other disease..........contracted by visiting a kennel, a vet clinic, dog show, or by coming in contact with infected feces from visiting a park. This can occur where an affected dog with parvo or other disease will contaminate an area by leaving its feces.
8) At what age can I pick my puppy up? When the puppy is at least 9 weeks of age and having had a vet check and having had at least two series of shots providing immunity against viruses (continued shots will be needed along with regular vet checks).
9) Do you do health clearances on your dogs ? Yes, we do preliminary x-rays on hips and elbows. We also screen for patellas, heart, thyroid, CERF, and cystinuria testing. (Cystinuria is a kidney disorder that some newfies have or carry in the genes. It is very important for your breeder to know that the puppies they are producing are not affected by this terrible disease!)
10) How many litters did Champion Waterlords Chief Silver Cloud produce in his lifetime? One litter was produced at his breeders before 2000 and only 4 litters were produced by Sugar Bear Newfoundlands.
11) How old do your newfoundlands normally live? What is their longevity?
Champion Waterlords Chief Silver Cloud "Silver Cloud" lived to be near 11 years of age and Tycoon My Fair Lady "Courtney" lived to be 12 years and 8 months. Both of these dogs are my foundation/bloodlines and it appears that the the bloodline has very good longevity.
12) Has your kennel ever had Parvo or other disease? NO , and I want to keep it that way.
13) Do you breed to Champions? Yes up to the point in which Ch. Waterlords Chf Silver Cloud passed away we bred four litters. We have also shipped in semen in 2005 from Threeponds and bred to Champion Topmast Oliver Twist, OFA .( Mandy is the girl we kept) We also shipped in semen in 2006 from Lara Spears and bred to Champion Kilyka's Just Add Water. ( Maddie is the girl we kept) . Progestrone testing is required on the female here to determine ovulation, semen is shipped in, transcervical AI's are performed. These procedures are VERY costly.
14) Can you provide references? Yes, upon request
15) If a puppy owner is unable to keep their puppy, will you take it back? Yes
16) Will you take pictures of my puppy so I can see how he or she is growing?
Yes I will take photos at two week intervals as follows: birth, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and at 6
weeks of age.
17) Are the puppies sold on limited registration? Yes all puppies sold as pets will be sold with limited registration on spay and neuter contracts. Approximately 99-100% of all puppies produced by Sugar Bear Newfoundlands are sold as pets. This does not mean they are of lesser quality by any means because many have show potential. As a breeder we are always looking for loving permanent pet homes. This is why we screen all potential puppy owners.
18) Do you sell puppies on full registration for breeding or showing? Yes with
co-ownership. If the puppy owner choose to want to breed they have to obtain passing OFA health clearances on the dog before breeding and both the puppy owner & breeder are agreeable to the selected show quality mate having been show quality with equal OFA health clearances and that the bloodline is a suitable match.
19) Do you ship puppies? Yes , while we would love for you to set up an appointment to come and meet myself & the puppies in person , we do ship puppies at 9+ weeks within the USA only. To my amazement the puppies adjust so well to their new homes as they meet their new owners wagging their tails and are once again ready to be loved , ready to eat, & ready to play!!
20) What is your nearest Airport? The largest airport is in Louisville, Kentucky or what is called the Bowman Airport. There is also a smaller airport with landing strips for small passenger airplanes located in Sellersburg, Indiana. We can pick you up & take you to our place or meet you at the airport. We are located about 1.5- 2 hours south of Indianapolis, IN.
21) Do you sell adults? yes upon approval of home. All adults are sold with a one week trial run. If the dog does not adjust to his/her home as quickly as expected, the owner can return the dog. At any point in a puppy or adults lifetime whereby the owner is not able to keep the dog, it can be returned to Sugar Bear or a suitable home will be recommended.
