The College for Women has had an
interesting career. Originally a School
for Christian girls, it was taken over recognised and thrown open
to girls of all castes and creeds by the Travancore Government
in 1864 during the reign of
H. H. Sri Ayilliam Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore. It was then
known as the Sircar Girls School but was recognised as, a High
School
by the Madras University only in 1890 .In
1897, it became the Maharaja's College for Girls.
In 1920 the College became a First Grade Institittion and
the name "College for Girls" was changed to "College for Women".
