Old Things Made New

You've been searching for a new house for sometime now. You've looked in many different areas and nothing seemed right, but one day you get a call. It seems some stranger you had heard about but never met has died and left you a gift... a new house! All you have to do is say, "Yes, I accept!" and it's yours. So you move in, but it doesn’t feel any different from the old house you left.

You've brought with you all the old things, the things that made you feel comfortable before. Some you've held onto for many years and couldn't bring yourself to get rid of them and the memories they hold. It seems you haven't moved very far from your old house after all. As you go about your daily life in this new house, doing the same things you've always done, the same way you've always done them, and trying so hard to make it a home, there is a sudden knock at the door. "Who could it be?" you wonder, since you haven't invited anyone over. You open the door, and the stranger standing there is someone you don't recognize. But you want to be a good neighbor, so you invite the stranger in.

To your amazement, he begins to throw out all your belongings. He throws out your living room set, your favorite chair... he takes your pictures off the wall and throws them out as well. He gets rid of all the books you've kept, your old desk, and even your clothing. Then he begins to wash your walls, and by the time he's done, you're left with nothing but an empty house with walls as white as snow. He's gotten rid of all the things you have been hanging onto for forever, and you're at a loss for words. He goes back outside and you take a deep breath, not knowing what to say or do... you’re just trying to understand what has taken place. When he appears at your door again, you're amazed at what he is doing. He's bringing with him a brand new living room set, chair, books, pictures, and a desk. When he's finished, you have all new things to go with your brand new home. Again overwhelmed, and without words, the tears stream down your face. For the first time, you feel like a brand new person. As you take a closer look at the stranger, you see that he has tears flowing down his face, too.

You begin to recognize him as someone you had heard about but had never invited into your home, and you begin to realize, not only do you have a new home with brand new things, but a new friend. As he disappears from sight, He says, "My name is Jesus. You can call Me anytime day or night... I will always be in your heart." When Jesus moves in, He removes all the old things and replaces them with new ones!

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
--2 Corinthians 5:17--
