A Candle Burning

By Lori

Michael Guerin let himself into his house well after midnight. His night had been long but the mural for Roswell's new art building was finished. He sighed tiredly before he started his trek upstairs.

Reaching the top of the stairs he glanced down the hall to where his children were supposed to be sleeping. He saw a glow of dim light from Claire's room and shook his head. Walking down the hall he heard a soft murmur and when he poked his head in he saw that a movie was playing on her TV. He shut it off and then turned his sleeping five year old daughter rightside up before pulling a blanket over her and kissing her forehead. God, you look like your mother, he thought before leaving the room.

Figuring he should check on her twin brothers, Michael opened the door to his sons' room. Dim moonlight lit Joshua's face and Michael could see the outline of his headphones. Smiling slightly he turned off the walkman and put it on the nightstand beside the boy's bed. He pulled the blanket more tightly around him and then turned to the other side of the room where Hunter slept.

Hunter's name had been his wife's idea. She'd insisted, saying that it came to her in dream when she was pregnant with the three of them. He'd rolled his eyes at the time but now he had to admit it suited his son.

Hunter was the only one who was peacefully sleeping. Of course he was slightly snoring but he did that every night. "Night Hunter." He whispered softly before exiting the boys' room.

One stop left before he could go to his own room and go to sleep. He opened the door to his daughter, Alana's room. Their youngest at three years old sucked her thumb silently as she slept in her new bed. Michael covered his daughter to her shoulder before he kissed her forehead. "Night angel."

He left the room and headed for his own. The room was dark except for a candle by the front window. He smiled. She'd been leaving a candle burning for him since they were teenagers sneaking around. He quickly discarded his clothes before running a hand through his hair. He blew the candle out and immediately she stirred.

"Michael?" Her sleepy voice called out to him in the dark.

"It's me baby."

"You're late." A soft scolding that made him smile as he made his way across the bedroom.

"Sorry. But I finished it." He climbed into bed.

"Can't wait to see it." She shifted as they got comfortable in each other's arms. "Mmm." She sighed as he kissed her neck. "Kids okay?"

"Sleeping peacefully." He pushed the hair that covered her face back. "How'd your meeting go?"

"The dean is an idiot but he finally went with our idea." She mumbled sleepily.

"Good." He smiled down at her. "Go back to sleep."

"K. I love you."

"I love you, too, Liz."
