Deja Vu

Liz Guerin laid down on the couch in the keeping room of her house. She snuggled down into the worn cushions and lay on her side.

“Elizabeth?”

She looked up. Michael was standing in the doorway.

“Hey.” She said sitting up.

“Room for one more?”

“Always.”

Michael sat down next to her after shutting the door behind him.

“So?”

“So?”

“What’s going on? Claire said you’ve been acting strange all afternoon.”

Liz drew her knees up to her chin. “Do you ever worry about the past biting you in the ass?”

“What happened?”

“It’s funny you know? We joke around and say that there’s no difference in the pictures of me from when I was a kid and pictures of Claire and Alana now. But I never really saw it until now.”

“Why? What happened?”

“Alana brought home her lab partner today.”

"And?”

“It’s Eli Evans.”

Michael closed his eyes for a moment and then he looked at her. “Max and Tess’ son.”

“Bingo. I’m telling you Michael it was like turning the clock back, only this time I was my mother watching me and Max.”

“Well it could be worse.”

“It is. At least I think it is. I was watching them. He was acting the way Max used to act around me. Once I noticed that is.”

“C’mere.” Michael opened his arms to Liz and she sank into them gratefully. The two repositioned themselves so they were lying down. “Is that why you’re in here?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well everything in this room is from when we lived in New York. A time in our lives when we didn’t have to worry about Tess or Max or their son.”

“Or our daughter.”

“Of course then we didn’t have to worry about anyone’s children. None of us had any." Michael pointed out.

“Ah the good old days.” Liz smiled wryly. “Ever wish we’d stayed in New York?”

“Once in a while. I think we got lucky one to many times. I mean Claire won’t have an Evans’ boy in her life and Hunter and Josh won’t fall in love with the same girl.”

“I hope. They’re still young Michael. God we were seventeen when we fell in love. The same age they are now.”

“I don’t think we have anything to worry about baby. Josh is so into Amelia Valenti he can’t see straight.”

“And Hunter likes Miranda Jordan.”

“That’s Vicki and Tommy’s daughter isn’t it?”

“Yeah. Little brunette. Hunter brought her home after school yesterday.” Liz smiled. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe this is just one of those things and we shouldn’t worry.”

“Yeah although I have to say I’m glad Max and Tess waited before they had kids.”

“You’re telling me. I don’t think I could go through this again.”

“We might have to.”

“Why?”

“Tess and Max have a daughter Brandon’s age.”

“We’re moving.”
