Kong Hybrid Height: 12-14 ft. Head Type: Multi-headed Head Diameter: NA Days to Maturity: NA Hints from Kong creator, Tom Heaton: "Hey, if you grow the Kong here is something fun. When it gets around 5-6 feet tall, nip off the top growing point. This will cause the plant to stall at that height and force all the plant resource into making flower in the leaf axils. It makes a really dense and full hedge if you do that - a nice wind break too! This only works on Kong because it has a branching gene in it, it will not do much on the single headed ones like American Giant and Paul Bunyan." Description: This variety, created by Tom Heaton, appeared in 2000 by NK Lawn & Garden. One of the most unique giant varieties on the market. The first heavily branched, multi-headed plant. Where can I find this variety? NK Lawn & Garden does not sell this variety on the web, but you can find it any stores that carries NK Lawn & Garden products. Contact NK Lawn & Garden to find out what stores near you carry NK Lawn & Garden products. |

Personal Experience: year: 2001 this was my best year for Kong. I grew a row of them at my house in New York, and although they didn't get taller than 10 feet, they were some of the bulkiest sunflowers I've had to date. year:2002 Tried to grow two Kong plants, but neither amounted to anything very large. I had trouble with all of my hybrid plants in 2002. Possibily because of fertilizing techniques I was experimenting with. year:2003 Another bad year for my Kong Hybrids. I tried to grow one Kong, but the heavy rains through May and June hampered most of my plants, including the Kong plant. |
