~ Book Reviews ~ SCIENCE HORIZONS |
THE LIVING ENERGY UNIVERSE "How would you feel if you knew scientifically that everything in the universe is eternal, alive, and evolving?" That's the question put forth by University of Arizona medical/neurological scientists Dr. Gary Schwartz and Dr. Linda Russek in the preface of their mind-opening book, The Living Energy Universe. It's a rollicking ride through some of the latest logical, philsophical, medical, and quantum scientific evidence for a relatively old idea posed to science only recently: that everything in the universe--and indeed, the universe itself--is conscious and with memory. The dynamic doctors have taken this idea and shaped it into their own scientific hypothesis of "Systemic Memory." It's a controversial concept, to say the least, with mixed reviews in the scientific community (ranging from: "too absurd to even consider" to "provocative and profound"). Controversy isn't always a bad thing in the sciences, though; every now and then, it helps power the thought revolutions that help keep science "alive!" While the implications of Schwartz's and Russek's hypothesis could literally reconstruct our views on nature and the universe, the logic processes behind their hypothesis have not been disproven. The only obvious problem with the hypothesis is lack of necessary mathematics to back the ideas and make them truly viable. Upholders of the widely embraced (and once highly controversial) Superstring Theory are facing similar difficulty. In order to prove such all-encompassing theries and concepts workable (or unworkable), complex mathematics beyond our current means is required. Within the next fifty years, this problem may be successfully overcome. But, until then...whether you're a natural skeptic or a born believer, if you're looking for a new and lively approach to science with philsophical overtones, you'll have some fun with this one. And you may never look at inanimate objects in quite the same way ever again. |
