SPINaps: OK, Lee's coming right now. Just talked to him on the phone. Sorry for the delay.

OnlineHost: Copyright 1995 America Online, Inc.

OnlineHost: The auditorium consists of two major areas: the audience, where you are right now, and the stage, where the speakers appear. Text which you type onscreen shows only to those in your row, prefaced by the row number in parentheses, such as (2) if you are in row 2. To interact with the speaker, use the Interact icon on your screen. To send your question to the speaker, click on the Interact icon, then use the Ask a Question option.

SPINaps: Lee should be here any second. Hang on folks. Sorry for the delay.

SPINaps: OK OK OK, we're getting Lee up here. Hang on...!!!!

SPINaps: Hey, folks. We're having some weird technical problem or something. Lee is online....

SPINaps: There he is.

LeeSncYuth: Hello, sorry if I'm late peeps!

OnlineHost: Unlike so many of the other noise bands that formed in New York City in the early '80s Sonic Youth has had the fortitude to hold on long enough to develop its ideas well beyond the original stances. As a result, the quartet has gotten better and better, moving from cacophony to chilling beauty, arising from the underground to become emissaries to the real rock world.

OnlineHost: Many of you already know Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo from his postings in the SPINonline Lollapalooza Tour Journals. He's here tonight to field your questions, reminisce on the Lollapalooza just passed, and discuss his band's future plans. Fire away with your questions. We'll take as many as we can...

LeeSncYuth: Just been out to the great prairie plains of youth but now returned amongst the tall towers.

SPINaps: Lee, where are you typing from???

LeeSncYuth: I'm at my (new) home in lower Manhattan. The end of Lolla was a bit sad, people/friends who'd been together all summer, but also kinda a relief. (I'm gonna type kinda sloppy tonight so excuse pls).

SPINaps: I'll start sending some questions out, Lee....

Tabouli10: Greetings Sir, Wondering if you ever had an inkling to work with the likes of Tom Waits? It would seem to me to be a strike anywhere match.

LeeSncYuth: Funny you should mention that as he was backstage at one of the L.A. shows, and I got to meet and talk with him - He's so great! He used to live near me, and I'd see him in line at the food store at midnight buying a can of beer.

CDPoole: Hi Lee, Craig in Athens, GA. What's up with the fall tour?

LeeSncYuth: Fall U.S. tour begins around October 15 till November 15.

SYDaydrea: What is your favorite Sonik album? The hardest to make?

LeeSncYuth: Favorite is a hard one but the new one - Washing Machine, out September 25 - def is my fav of the last bunch, becuz it was so fun to make. Hardest? Maybe Goo just cos of major label stuff.

Davebec: What is the value of a live performance over a video these days?

LeeSncYuth: Are you kidding???!? Live is LIVE - spontaneous, never heard before or again... Sounds heading out for the stratosphere, gone the moment after creation. Live is about NOW.

Goo77: Who was your fave Beatle?

LeeSncYuth: At various pts in my life, any one of them. Still have fav periods of them all. I truly was one of those 9 yr olds in front of a mirror with tennis racquet!

R Jungman: Is yr book out yet, if not, when will it be coming out?

LeeSncYuth: Two books are out, on sm presses: ROADMOVIES and BOOKSTORE...poems, journals, musings.

GRAFIKO2: What effects pedals do you use when playing live?

LeeSncYuth: Fav is maestro ring modulator, also 2 sec delay (x2). The rest are pretty standard.

EENNET: Lee, I'm a new Sonic Youth fan but have become more and more familiar with the back catalog and have been drawn to your songs, especially stuff like 'Hey Joni' and 'Wish Fulfillment'. I was disappointed that you were absent from songwriting on EXPERIMENTAL. Why was that and will that be the case on the next SY album?

LeeSncYuth: Next LP I have two. Last one was a kinda weird situation, complicated. My songs are not always easy for us to do (wow my p-book just freeked out for a sec!).

Russ2468: Lee: I read that certain members in SY were readers of Philip K. Dick material. Still an interest in Sci Fi lit?

LeeSncYuth: Yes, still SF interest. Best recently in SNOW CRASH by Neal Stephenson. Read it!!!

INZOMBIA: Is there anything new happening on the Ciccone Youth front?--Yukiko

LeeSncYuth: CY is always in the background, practicing Stereolab covers at the moment.

Coelancat: Hello Lee, Melissa, SF CA. Any new side projects spawning? You guy's show at Lolla was so amazing. You put me in a happy mood for the next three days after.

SPINaps: Similar question but...

LeeSncYuth: We all have lots of sideproj going at once; have all had records out recently under our own names.

SilvrRock: C'mon SPINaps get him to post a touring schedule or at least when(if) they're coming to Phoenix.

SPINaps: Let me just say that as of today, SPINonline has a brand new concert tour database. Check it out after the conference. Excuse the interruption, lee.

LeeSncYuth: We are trying to make info avail on our Usenet group (like me and T's tour diaries) and will post tour sched there as we know it.

ZIPY2: What are some of your new fav bands?

LeeSncYuth: I like Doo Rag, Bardo Pond, lots of others I forgit at the moment.

Royale353: How was touring with the Pavement?

LeeSncYuth: Pavement are the best band in the land!!! I think I watched more sets by them than any other Lolla band. Would go out in amongst all the empty seats as they came out and sit front row center thru their whole set. See my diaries for major espousal on Pave.

Scremager: Why did you put out a solo album?

LeeSncYuth: Why not? So much to do, to hear...need a dump truck to unload my head.

Chris UCB: How do you come up with the tunings that you use?

LeeSncYuth: We just start listening together and twisting the little pegs until it sounds nice.

Emmett19: Is it true you made a cameo on Mrs. Doubtfire?

LeeSncYuth: No.

JsLizard: Who decides the set each evening??????

LeeSncYuth: Usually T and S, maybe K. I'm usually least involved cos they'll never do my song orders. Or not often.

SPINaps: Why not???

LeeSncYuth: Funny, I love making up set lists/structures for my solo perfs but do not find it easy with SY therefore bow out.

GG APEHEA: What was your impression of touring with Yo La Tengo?

LeeSncYuth: My view of Yo La Tengo is complicated. I think they are a great band in many ways and great people. The music sometimes has too much nostalgia in it or something.

Scremager: Your show blew me away. Did you get in trouble for telling us to rush the stage in Atlanta?

LeeSncYuth: Yes, 'lanta was the one night there wble fr over enthusiastic kids. All bigwig Geffen there that night; some of them got trampled too! Oops! Finally, last few shows of the tour, we got it worked out for them to let kids come down w/o our asking fr stage. It worked great...wish we'd done it earlier.

SYDaydrea: What did you think of Thurston's solo effort?

LeeSncYuth: Man, which one? DID YOU HEAR THE CORPUS HERMETICUM RELEASE? (sorry caps) That is one ill pup. P Hearts roks too. (He's singing along w/ the gtr line, though...) Ha ha. That's priv joke to T.

Yrgrrrl: Is it true that SY wouldn't do Lolla if they didn't have a say in who else played?

LeeSncYuth: Yes, it's kinda true.

SPINaps: Who did you guys say you wanted and didn't want?

LeeSncYuth: As Watt would say..."WAITIN'". WANTED S-CHUNK, PAVE, LIZARD, DOO, LOTS...

Jed TPTB1: U a Yankees fan. Any interests in sports.

SPINaps: Softball for you....

LeeSncYuth: MICKEY MANTLE WAS FIRST YOUNG HERO (sorry caps) but haven't that sports images...Like to play tennis these days though. It was a minor running thread on Lolla - the various tennis or golf matches.

SARAH 1JA: Can you get me backstage passes at the Academy show in N.Y. this fall...please!!!!!!!!

LeeSncYuth: Yeah sure.

Katgirl76: Any fights with Courtney?

LeeSncYuth: No fights, but I didn't speak to her much as the tour wore on - She really retreated into a tight shell, didn't fraternize often.

SPINaps: Lee, do you think the Thurston/Courtney fight at the beginning of the tour had something to do with that retreat?

LeeSncYuth: I think it was just 'Let's jump in, here I am, and what do I do now', plus she's extreme, can't live dull.

Coelancat: Is Sonic Youth planning to start a site on the WWW or anything similar to that effect?

LeeSncYuth: Good name C! Um...not sure. There is one, though. Hold on, I'll get it...http://www.magick.net/~michael/music.html is a web site for lots of stuff, us included, I think.

DJelli363: Do you care for Weezer at all?

LeeSncYuth: Wweezzeeeerrr...Didn't like them at all, but love the vids and that new song "my love is a hartbreaker" is really good, I like it. Mathrock extraordinaire.

SilvrRock: I just wanted to say thanx for turning me on to Coltrane and Ornette. Any other jazz guys you thing I should check out? ( I also love Bird)

LeeSncYuth MONK!!! MILES!! Mingus, Ayler, Stockhausen. What a time line that is!

ROS850: What was it like meeting Patti Smith?

LeeSncYuth: Meeting Patti was so great and also a little weird the way meeting an idol can be. They are never exactly what you expect. I thought a good word to describe her, in a good way, was "flinty".

Smudgeon: Lee, do you have any advice for new bands just starting out?

LeeSncYuth: No advice but listen to yr ears before all else. Mind-ear connection.

Diego101: Are you going to make videos for Washing Machine or release singles?-Diego101

LeeSncYuth: Yeah, think so.

PenKaps: What's yr fave guitar?

LeeSncYuth: Right now, Fender Tele deluxxes.

DNA Diva: The album 'Made in the U.S.A.' is great, but how is the movie?

LeeSncYuth: Movie is a x between 'Stranger than Paradise' and 'Paris, Texas'. A real wanna be hybrid. Coupla good scenes, no movie tho.

PurtyNpun: Who's your fave Muppet?

LeeSncYuth: Don't know Muppets well...HEY, CAN I REACH OUT TO ALL OF YOU? TELL ME WHAT BANDS YR LISTENING TO. MUSIC, BOOKS, FILMS, ETC...JUST TITLES/NAMES PLSE.

SPINaps: Lee, what screen name should they send stuff to??

LeeSncYuth: RIGHT NOW, HERE ON LINE. JUST INTERJECT EM IN THE FLOW.

SPINaps: Hang on. They can send stuff here. Send your answers to Lee's question by using the Comment button.

LeeSncYuth : YEP, but keep feeding q's.

SPINaps: Got that? Answer Lee's questions by using the COMMENT button.

LeeSncYuth: The funny thing about online talk/chat is how loopy the convs get. You have to keep this mental leap frog going.

SPINaps: Yeah, weird flow. Gets all backwards.

Emmett19: O.J. Simpson. Guilty or innocent?

LeeSncYuth: O.J., I'm sick of it. NEXT!

SPINaps: I'm going to start shooting these comments out now. Don't get confused, people.

LeeSncYuth: They won't.

R Jungman: Are going to go to anyplace smaller, for instance, say, Des Moines!!

LeeSncYuth: We are trying to play some out of the way places this tour and have talked about doing a "tiny towns" tour.

INZOMBIA: Slant 6, Norman Mayer Group, the Warmers, Bikini Kill --Yukiko.

PurtyNpun: Propaghandi is great.

LeeSncYuth: Weird name.

SARAH 1JA: Will you guys get Spike Jonze to direct yr new video (speaking of Weezer), and how can you get me backstage passes? If I write you guys at S Death, will you remember me???

LeeSncYuth: Spike is king. Have not yet not liked any single thing he's done. Amazing. I want Jarmusch though.

TomViolen: Will Self, Pynchon, Gibson, Nabokov, Tibor Fischer, Winterson, Palace Brothers, Yo La Tengo, Superchunk, Pavement.

LeeSncYuth: Super-pave-chunk-ment.

X Hi Jak: Are the rumors that you and Lisa Marie getting divorced true?

LeeSncYuth: Yes.

SARAH 1JA: Sonic Youth, BIKINI KILL, Huggybear, Crass, Sex Pistols, Superchunk, Sebadoh, Babes in Toyland, Pavement, Descendents, Bratmobile, the Clash, etc.

LeeSncYuth: Where's the art/wank weenie conting??

Royale353: What is your favorite (or one of your favorite) songs to play live?

LeeSncYuth: So many are fun - Right now, Washing Mach and Diamond Sea fr new rec are incred fun.

Brettcros: CLOCKWORK ORANGE IS A GOOD FAMILY FLICK.

ROBBISH: Who do you think is the best guitaRIST IN ROCK?

LeeSncYuth: Don't care. Malkmus.

Conaner: I listen to Swervedriver, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, a new band out of CA called Sci-Flyer, etc.

DJelli363: How long have you been playing guitar, and how much do you practice a day, or week?

LeeSncYuth: Ten minutes, kiddies...never practice, only play now. When rehearsing, we do 2-3 hrs day/4 days week.

DaphneSky: Lee...we all love u....really...but when...is....oh forget it.....next time.

LeeSncYuth: WOW

Vin egirl: How does it feel to be a rock star?

LeeSncYuth: Y'know, this phrase been bandied about lately (and all by folks who should know better) and is so untrue, and we don't feel like it. Some just know our faces. Ask Ms. Love.

PenKaps: You asked for it, Lee: Archers of Loaf, Pool, Fugazi, Minor Threat, MW, Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets

LilacLily: Was doing Lolla worth it? I mean, did it bother you about the C Love media circus, or was it worth it to be able to perform so often?

LeeSncYuth: I love that circus. See my diaries. It was a lot of fun and a broadening experience overall, I think. On many levels such as this- computers were another running thread on this tour for many, digital pix.

LilacLily: Mississippi John Hurt. Oh, he's so real.

SYDaydrea: Nietzsche!!

GG APEHEA: Is there any plan to release the videos of Dirty, Experimental, and possibly Washing Machine in a package similar to the "Goo" video?

LeeSncYuth: May release those vids at some pt, not lately tho.

Diego101: I listen to Babes in Toyland, Free Kitten, Bikini Kill, L7, Sonic Youth, and loads of others.

CDPoole: Music: Versus, Kids Soundtrack (Lou Barlow), Slant 6

Diego101: In an extremely anti-MTV climate, do you want to be on MTV, or are you against it?

LeeSncYuth: I don't care about it. I watch 120 Minutes for the new vids, when I can. That's it. Occasionally you fall prey to a current HOOK and watch for it like ya used ta listen fer fav song on car radio, but usually I don't care about it. It's so foreign to me. But I do have a secret liking for a very bad vid/song that's on at the moment. I know it's bad, yet love it.

DJelli363: Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet: Band.

Blackpope: Ramones, Hole, Pavement, Geraldine Fibbers, Free Kitten, Red Aunts, Crowsdell, Home, etc. Any books by Bukowski, Burroughs, Jim Carroll, and lots of zines, small press.

X Hi Jak: Do you watch the Simpsons? Great show.

LeeSncYuth: Don't rely watch TV except CNN - more compumonitors than sitcoms.

Yrgrrrl: Listen Up: Voices from the New Feminist Generation is a rilly rilly good book. It makes me feel good to be a grrrl.

INZOMBIA: I know you had a song on the My So-Called Life soundtrack. What did you think of the show?

Rawkhead: Clawhammer, Dany Warhols, Horsey, 18th Dye are good bands, all differ from each other a lot.

LeeSncYuth: Didn't even know what it was like but am recent convert who totally loves it. Still haven't seen half of them, and looking forward to savoring them.

Conaner: Don't under estimate us SPINaps; we're smarter than you think.

JsLizard: Uhhhh....Right now, Lee, I've been listening to a lot of different stuff. Saw you guys in Sacramento last week; you were unbelievable. Just wondering why you keep so many guitars on the side but never use them. Isn't it easier just to use an effects peddle?

LeeSncYuth: We use multi gtrs fer diff tunings. Besides, they are way cooler in and of themselves than any fx ped.

TomViolen: Do you think Green Day is punk rock or just the band that was on the Muppet show (they have the same color fur and all) ?

GG APEHEA: Siren/ "in the absence of the sacred" 7". The Catnips /"blue Thelma" cassette (local bands). Would love to tell you about more of sent tape from Sonoma County - online name GG APEHEAD

Katgirl76: Redd Kross!

LeeSncYuth: Wow, this is getting confusing! We're having fun now.

SPINaps: Lee, let's just take one or two more...

LeeSncYuth: Okay, three more.

Emmett19: I love the Grifters' "Crappin' You Negative" album. Heard it?

LeeSncYuth: Haven't heard it but have picked up their gen vibe fr hanging in Memphis when making new alb.

SPINaps: OK, three more. I'm dumping the question queue. Ask NOW and I'll send it to LEEEEE

LeeSncYuth: Yee haa

LeeSncYuth : Giddyup

LeeSncYuth: Oii kwhhhhhhhhhhr

X Hi Jak: Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, man.

LeeSncYuth: Ah, kewl.!.

Layne25: Hey Lee, did you ever see TANK GIRL? Great flick!

LeeSncYuth: Didn't see it.

Yaksoho: Potatomen, new Rancid, Frumpies, Peechees. Susie Chapstick Band. Frogger. 7-10 Split, REFRIGERATOR. Lou B.

LeeSncYuth: Lou Barlow, won't you pls call me? Really loved yr Losing losers disc. Also I really love the Silver Jews rec. Have you heard it? It's like Dylan's J W Harding. Great rec. And also GATE - Golden Gate. By Gate.

R Jungman: Ronald Reagan Industrial Light Orchestra!!

MLash7280: I'm reading lots of horror; Stephen King, Clive Barker. Music...SY (of course), been a big fan for many, many yrs. I like Celtic music (strange, huh). Jazz is pretty cool as well. I have so many tastes in music- some strange, some not.

Coelancat: Hello Lee. Of course, I listen to you guys + side projects, but also Mudhoney, Bikini Kill, Black Flag, the Wipers, Sebadoh, the Vaselines, Beat Happening, Dinosaur Jr. I just finished reading "Confusion is Next", and now I am starting "Backlash".

LeeSncYuth: My friend Michael Morley fr NZ - one of my picks fer top ten of yr.

LeeSncYuth: HELP! IS THAT IT?> woa nelly.

SPINaps : OK, that 's it. That was a barrage.

LeeSncYuth : I'm gonna push the button...

SPINaps: My eyes are popping out of my head.

LeeSncYuth: push the button...

LeeSncYuth : the button..

SPINaps: Thanks, Lee, for hanging out tonight.

LeeSncYuth: button.

SPINaps: OK, I'm going to eject Lee.

LeeSncYuth: butt

SPINaps: Ready.

LeeSncYuth : gone.
