COLIN HODGKINSON sessions

This is the list of the sessions I know Colin Hodgkinson appears... I've classified them into several categories:
SESSIONS WITH FORMER/CURRENT BANDMATES

Tramline Colin plays in the 2nd album by this band, commanded by Micky Moody, who was later Colin's companion, both in Back Door and Whitesnake. Also here, another Back Door musician, Ron Aspery (sax).
Alexis Korner
As I've explained in Colin's biography page, he collaborated during a long time with Alexis Korner. He can be considered the father of British Blues, and many later-famous musicians started their careers in his group, so it's no strange finding them along the years, willing to play with Alexis again.

Alexis Korner album included Colin Hodgkinson and Ron Aspery (from Back Door), Tim Hinkley, Mike Patto (here, on piano), Boz Burrell, Mel Collins & Ian Wallace (these three musicians, from King Crimson, became Alexis Korner band for a while), Zoot Money (keyboards).

Mr. Blues includes many of the same musicians again: Colin Hodgkinson and Ron Aspery, Tim Hinkley, Mike Patto, Boz Burrell, Mel Collins, Ian Wallace, Zoot Money (keyboards).

Get off my cloud contains again a great musicians list: Keith Richards, Peter Frampton, Steve Marriott, Neil Hubbard and the members of Kokomo, Rick Wills, the much-missed Nicky Hopkins, Morris Pert ...

The compilation Bootleg him! compiles unreleased tapes from several periods, and contains appearances from: Cyril Davies, Peter Fensome, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Charlie Watts, Paul Rodgers, Robert Plant, Andy Fraser, Victor Brox, Annette Brox, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Herbie Flowers, Herbie Goins, Henry Lowther, John Marshall, Alan Skidmore, Danny Thompson, Ray Warleigh, Lol Coxhill, the late Graham Bond, Terry Cox, among many others.

The Juvenile delinquent album is credited to Alexis Korner with the HRH Band. That is: Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Alan Ross (guitar) and Tony Hicks (drums). With Morris Pert (percussion) plus additional keyboard players (Robin Lumley) and backup vocalists (such as Katie Kissoon, Doreen Chanter, Irene Chanter, Jaki Graham or Ruby Turner, what a great chorus!). Recorded during September/October 1983.

Meets Jack Daniels comprises 12 live tracks. 5 tracks were recorded live in 1975, while the remaining 7 were recorded live in 1969, with his band New Church (Alexis Korner (guitar, vocals), Peter Thorup (guitar, vocals), Nick South (bass), Ray Warleigh (sax), Sappho Korner (percussion, vocals)). The live tracks from 1975 were recorded with his then band: Alexis Korner, Peter Thorup (guitar), Dick Morrisey (sax), Kenny Gutmann (drums). Colin's then-current band, Back Door, were the supporters in the tour. But they usually joined to play with Alexis band. So, these 5 tracks also include the whole Back Door lineup: Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Ron Aspery (sax) and Adrian Tilbrook (drums).

Memorial concert volume 2 was recorded live at Buxton Opera House 21st May 1995. A concert was made ten years after Alexis died (1984), and it was held to reiase funds for a Cancer Care centre. Due to the success, they repeated, and another concert was held in 1995 (this one). A 3CD was released from that concert, and this is volume 2. What's the roster list?  3 songs by Chris Farlowe, 4 songs by Zoot Money, 2 songs by The Detonators, 1 song by Norman Beaker Band, 1 song by James Litherland, 1 song by the great Mick Abrahams, 1 song by Tony McPhee, 1 song by Brian Knight with Toni Vines, 1 song by Dave Berry. Among the musicians backing them: Pete Brown, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Colin Hodgkinson, Alan Skidmore, Ray Warleigh and Brian Wood.

On the move includes tracks from Alexis Korner's long career. 17 tracks recorded from 1968-1982, previously unreleased in the UK. Some tracks are live recordings. The list of musicians is very long: Annette Brox (vocals), Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), Duster Bennett (harmonica), Peter Thorup (guitar), Andy Fraser (bass), Alan Spenner (bass), Boz Burrell (bass), Tim Hinkley (keyboards), Steve Miller (keyboards), Ray Warleigh (sax), Dick Morrisey (sax), Mel Collins (sax), Lol Coxhill (sax), John Halsey (drums), Ian Wallace (drums). This is the list of tracks/lineups where Colin appears (in chronological order):

In 'Rock me' (recorded 9 December 1969 at Auditorium Maximum Hamburg, Germany):

In 'Hey, good lookin'' (recorded 31 July 1973): In 'Fly united' (recorded live in Mainz, Germany, 24 April 1975) and 'You got the power (to turn me on)' (recorded live in Hamburg, Germany, 15 May 1975): In 'Working in a coalmine' (recorded January 1977): In 'Blood on the saddle' and 'Engine 143' (recorded 6 May and 8-9 June 1981): In 'Big boss man' (recorded 20 June 1982 at Arbon Festival, Switzerland):

Alexis Korner & Bob Hall Colin appears in this single by Alexis Korner and piano player Bob Hall, who was a member of Rocket 88, along with Colin. Don't know if Colin also plays in any album by Bob Hall.

Jan Hammer Talented keyboardist, he was an original member of the superb fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra. Later he collaborated with Jeff Beck. He is now most famous for composing the music for the TV-series "Miami vice". In this album, he still had part of the band he shared with Jeff Beck (Fernando Saunders on bass, and Tony Smith on drums). Colin sings lead only, and Fernando Saunders plays bass. The cover lists Hammer as: Jan Hammer, Colin Hodgkinson, Gregg "Geya" Carter, Bob Christiansen. However, drummer Carter and singer Christiansen do backup vocals only. Tony Smith plays drums.
Cozy Powell

Colin and Cozy Powell were together in Whitesnake at this time. So he played in this Cozy album. The lineup is: Gary Moore and Mel Galley (guitars), Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Who needs more? Colin co-writes the title track. It was recorded in London during September and October 1982.

The best of Cozy Powell is a compilation, including several tracks from Octopuss.

Konstantin Wecker As far as I know, Colin plays in two studio albums by this German singer and keyboardist. He also has recorded a live album with Colin, as we can read in the biography page.

In Wieder dahoam, he's backed by several jazz musicians, as Charlie Mariano (sax), Wolfgang Dauner (keyboards), plus Colin's bandmates Frank Diez (guitar) and Pete York (drums). Also with Johannes Faber (trumpet), Joe Gallardo (posaune, what's that in German?), Christof Lauer (sax). It was recorded during August/September 1986. It includes a Randy Newman tune. Produced by Horst Lippmann.

Ganz Schön Wecker was recorded in Munich during January/February 1988. The list of musicians is very long, mostly German players: Konstantin Wecker, plus Frank Diez (guitar), Stephan Diez (guitar), Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Wolfgang Dauner (keyboards), Hans Franek (keyboards), Johannes Faber (trumpet, flugelhorn), Charlie Mariano (sax), Christof Lauer (sax), Elmar Schmidt (schlagzeug, what's that?), Ernst Ströer (percussion). With the Munich Horns (horns, of course!) and Modern Swing Quartet (a string quartet).

Pete York He's the legendary drummer in Spencer Davis Group, but he also has been recording his own albums, as well as playing in many other artists albums and bands. You can read his name several times in my Colin pages, as they have played as a team in many albums.

Pete recorded a drum album with Ian Paice (from Deep Purple) around 1971. Many years later, he has developed the idea of a drummers feast. These sessions have been held under the Super Drumming monicker, and there are several albums recorded. They also appeared as TV specials.

Some years later, some compilations have appeared from these sessions, although some of the albums aren't credited to Pete York anymore (weird!!).

Killer: rockdrum highlights compiles 12 tracks from all these albums. The album cover shows photos of Cozy Powell, Ian Paice and Zak Starkey (wrongly written as Zag Starkey!). Some of the musicians featured here are: Pete York, Cozy Powell, Miller Anderson, Colin Hodgkinson, Jon Lord, Eddie Hardin, Ian Paice, Zak Starkey, Herman Rarebell, Nicko McBrain, Steve Ferrone, Brian Auger, and Bill Bruford, among others.

Pete York presents Super Drumming: the best is another compilation from the same sessions. This one has 13 tracks. Other musicians featured: Pete York, Cozy Powell, Miller Anderson, Colin Hodgkinson, Jon Lord, Eddie Hardin, Ian Paice, Zak Starkey, Herman Rarebell, Nicko McBrain, Steve Ferrone, Brian Auger, and Bill Bruford, among others.

Peter Maffay This German singer is very famous in his country. Colin usually plays in his albums, as well as being part of his live band from time to time.

Liebe 'stable' musicians include: Carl Carlton (guitar), Frank Diez (guitar), Andy Becker (guitar), Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Jean-Jacques Kravetz (keyboards), Bertram Engel (drums, keyboards), plus collaborations by Alvin Lee (guitar, from Ten Years After, he also co-writes a song), Clarence Clemmons (sax, from E. Street Band), Bobby Stern (sax), and Lisa Germano (violin, usually in John Cougar band), Nick Payn (harmonica), Detlef Peterson (accordion), Pascal Kravetz (backing vocals), The Stylus Horns. There's a song co-written by Frank Diez, Colin and Peter Maffay, 'Funken machen feuer'.

The band in Freunde + propheten is: Peter Maffay (vocals, guitar), Carl Carlton (guitar), Pascal Kravetz (keyboards, bass, guitar), Bertram Engel (drums). With collaborations by: Jean-Jacques Kravetz (keyboards), Colin Hodgkinson (bass on 2 tracks), Frank Diez (guitar), Bobby Stern (sax).

The album Tabaluga und lilli contains collaborations by Carl Carlton (guitar, keyboards), Andreas Becker (guitar, keyboards), Frank Diez (guitar), Colin Hodgkinson (bass on 3 tracks), Pascal Kravetz (keyboards), Jean-Jacques Kravetz (keyboards), Bertram Engel (drums, keyboards), Nadeen Holloway (backing vocals), Jackie Carter (backing vocals). It was recorded during January to June 1993 in Munich.

Miller Anderson
(scan courtesy of Alex Gitlin)

For more info about Miller Anderson, check out his bio page. This is Miller's second solo album. Recorded by Miller Anderson (guitar, vocals), Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Wolfgang Norman Dalheimer (keyboards), Olaf Kübler (sax) and Wolfgang Haffner (drums). Produced by guitarist Frank Diez (Colin Hodgkinson's partner in The Electric Blues Duo). A superb album, if you ask me.

Jon Lord

Colin Hodgkinson and Miller Anderson appear on this new album by keyboard maestro Jon Lord. Sam Brown also sings in another song.

OTHER SESSIONS

Jamie Stone Sorry, I don't know who he is. He sings, writes and plays keyboards here. This album was recorded at Air Studio, London, during September/October 1977. The long musicians list include: Martin Kerslaw (guitar), Chris Rae (guitar), Kevin Stacey (guitar), Andy Pask (bass), Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Ron Aspery (sax), Ronnie Ross (woodwind), Pete Lemer (keyboards), Martin David (drums), Vicky Brown (backing vocals).

K2 Butterflies Both K2 and Butterflies are projects by Kornell Kovach, Yugoslavian keyboardist.

K2 lineup is:

Kornell Kovach (keyboards)
Linda Jardim (vocals)
Colin Hodgkinson (bass)
Paul Robinson (drums)
They released the album Why. With two special guests: Bernie Marsden (guitar) and Ray Russell (guitar). The album was recorded in London during February/March 1980. Mostly co-written by Kovach and producer/engineer Peter McNamee. It says: "keyboards supplied by Rod Argent Keyboards" (he owns a keyboard store).

Butterflies was co-written with the Israeli composer Nachum Heiman. He assembled a band especially to record this album:

Kornell Kovach (keyboards)
Tom Blades (guitar)
Andy Pask (bass)
Colin Hodgkinson (bass)
Joji Horita (percussion)
Paul Robinson (drums)

Ronnie Jack Sorry, I don't know who he is. In this album, he sings and plays keyboards, being backed by: Les 'Bells' Davidson (guitar), Colin Hodgkinson (bass, catalogued as 'bass man'), Nick Straker (keyboards), Graham Pleeth (keyboards), Bob 'Early' Jenkins (drums), plus: Isaac Guillory (guitar), Kuma Harada (bass), and Scotland the Greatest (backing vocals, who will be?). Recorded in London.

Mick Jagger The long awaited first solo album from the Rolling Stones singer. Colin only plays in one song, the beautiful ballad "Hard woman", along with former colleague Jan Hammer (piano), Jeff Beck (guitar), Pete Townshend (acoustic guitar), and Tony Thompson (drums). This song is one of my favourites from this album, but Jeff Beck solos along the whole album are great!!

Other great musicians involved in the album: Eddie Martinez (guitar), G.E. Smith (guitar), Nile Rodgers (guitar), Bill Laswell (bass, from Material), Robbie Shakespeare (bass), the late Bernard Edwards (bass), John 'Rabbit' Bundrick (keyboards), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Herbie Hancock (keyboards), Ray Cooper (percussion), Michael Shrieve (drums), Steve Ferrone (drums), Sly Dunbar (drums), Anton Fig (drums), etc.

Phil Carmen Brian Auger is the arranger in this album (also playing keyboards), so I think this must be the reason why Colin appears here. With: Dick Morrisey (sax), Bert Smaak (drums). Colin plays in almost every song. Recorded in Switzerland

James Young James Young was the guitarist in succesful band Styx. Colin has played in two solo albums by him.

City slicker was credited to James Young with Jan Hammer, so we can imagine why Colin plays here.

Out on a day pass is his second album, and contains appearances by fellow bandmate in Styx, John Panozzo (drums), plus great violin player Jerry Goodman (once in Mahavishnu Orchestra with Jan Hammer), and Willie Wilcox (drums, from Utopia).

Woodstock Taylor This female singer is going to release this album, produced by Zoot Money (also playing keyboards). With Brian Willoughby (guitar, from Strawbs), Ronnie Johnson (guitar, from Van Morrison band), Pete Brown (percussion, long time collaborator with Jack Bruce, in Cream and later on).
COLLECTIVE ALBUMS

VV.AA. This collective live album was recorded live in concert in Arbon, Switzerland, June 20th 1982. It contains two tracks by Alexis Korner & Colin Hodgkinson, 'High-heel sneakers' and 'Juvenile delinquent'. But it was released only in Switzerland.
VV.AA.
Bassists' paradise! Twelve bassists playing here. With Mo Foster (his track is 'Waves'), Kai Eckhardt  & Torsten De Winkel (Kai is lately with Trilok Gurtu and The Glympse), Laurence Cottle (from Fents, and once in Black Sabbath), Frank Itt, Wolfhound's Kick, Hattler/Kraus, Kim Clarke, Benjamin Hûllenkremer, Berliner Bass Ballett, Hellmut Hattler, Norbert Dömling and Robert Burns. Colin's track, 'Southpaw rag' (unfortunately, it's very short, only 1:28) is from 1986.
VV.AA. This is a blues compilation, but it includes 6 unreleased tracks. Artist list is: Stan Webb's Chicken Shack, Dave Kelly, Chris Barber, Zoot Money & Colin Hodgkinson, Paul Jones, Richie Milton and The Lowdown, Paul Lamb and The Kingsnakes, The Blues Band (with the song 'Fat city'), Gets/Z Loose, Duffy Power with Dick Heckstall-Smith, Norman Beaker and The Indigo Allstars, The Frank White Band, John Pearson, Gordon Smith, The Hideaway Blues Band.

The track by Zoot Money & Colin Hodgkinson is one of the previously unreleased ones. It really contains two songs: 'Geneva' (Trad./Korner) and 'My good luck soul' (written by Hudson). Its duration is 6'15", and it was recorded at Buxton, April 1994. I guess it's a live track (I don't have the album, probably taken from an Alexis Korner memorial concert).

If anyone wants to know, the other previously unreleased tracks are the ones by: Paul Jones, Paul Lamb and The Kingsnakes, Gets/Z Loose, Duffy Power with Dick Heckstall-Smith (the track is 'Everyday since you've been gone'), Norman Beaker and The Indigo Allstars.

VV.AA. This is a blues guitar album (the cover shows four Telecasters), credited to: Frank Diez, Tom Principato, Karl Ratzer and Dieter Uebler. Colin Hodgkinson also plays here. It includes a cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Albatross'.
Musicians mentioned in this page that I have projected to cover in my site someday: And short tributes to:
