Line-up: Jan Berry / Dean Torrence / Arnie Ginsberg (until late 1958)+++ Jan and Dean formed their first group, The Barons, still during High School +++ Their first hit was recorded in a garage and then sold to ARWIN records +++ It was released in April 1958, under the name of "Jan & Arnie", as Dean Torrence had left the band temporarily to serve a 6 month duty in the army +++ When he returned, Arnie left the group and gave up singing altogether +++ From 1959, Jan & Dean had a string of smash hits, starting with "Baby talk" (1959), "Heart and soul" (1961), "Surf City" (1963), their biggest hit, written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, "Dead man's curve" (1964) and "The little old Lady from Pasadena"(1964), to mention just a few +++ In 1966, Jan Berry was badly injured in a car crash, suffering serious brain damage, which tragically terminated Jan & Dean's brilliant career +++ After years of recovery, Jan Berry, finally returned to the stage in the mid 70s and performed again, together with Dean Torrence, in several gigs with the Beach Boys and James Brown +++ |
