Mount Olive, Alabama Learned to play the guitar from a black street musician +++ Started to sing at the age of 12 in his church choir +++ Formed his own band - the Drifting Cowboys - at the age of 13 +++ Met Frank Rose of publishers Acuff-Rose and signed an exclusive contract with them +++ Wrote more than 125 songs, incl. such C&W standards as "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)", "I'm so lonesome I could cry", "Kaw-Liga", "Cold, cold heart" and "Your Cheatin' Heart" +++ Although he only reached Billboard's "Best Selling Singles" Pop Charts once in 1952 (with Jambalaya), Hank Williams provided the groundwork for numerous later Country & Western and Folk artists +++ Died of heart failure on January 1, 1953 at the age of only 29 +++ |
