First pursued a career in baseball with the Houston Buffaloes +++ Had to leave the team due to a leg injury +++ Working as a radio DJ, he started writing songs and began to sing +++ First recordings in 1950 for MACY'S, later for the RCA-VICTOR label +++ Some of his unforgettable hits include "This is it", "Is It Really Over", "It Hurts So Much", "Distant Drums", "He'll Have To Go" and "Blue Side of Lonesome" +++ Died in a plane crash on July 1964 +++ Was inducted into the "Country & Western Hall Of Fame" in 1967 +++
