Line-Up: John McNally formed the Searchers - named after a John Wayne movie - as backing group for singer Johnny Sandon +++ The group was only signed to PYE records in 1963 +++ Their first release, "Sweets For My Sweet", an earlier Drifters recording, reached no. 1 in the UK in July 1963 +++ A tour through the UK with Roy Orbison, Tommy Roe and Bobby Rydell followed +++ Further hits in 1964 and 1965 included "Sugar And Spice", "Needles and Pins" (written by Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche), "Don't Throw Your Love Away" and "What Have They Done To The Rain" +++ Their rendition of "Love Potion No. 9", not charted in the UK, reached the no. 3 spot on Billboard's Hot 100, their only TOP 10 hit in the US +++ |
